Great College Pennants, mrkrab... love them all.
This thread makes me wonder... where did all of the creativity go? Do consumers today really not want something a bit more artistic? This mass-produced garbage of today is simply crap. |

Great article...
Ok, Evans is my new hero, based on that body of work and those creative/expressive logos. Of course some of his best stuff would be deemed "politically incorrect" today. I can really see the resemblance of the college pennants to the 3D Dodgers/Giants Pennants. His company was even based in my old college stompings grounds... Fullerton. In honor of Arthur Evans, I'm posting the photos below... |

Dodgers
Mark, the Dodgers three D pennant is my absolute favorite pennant of ALL TIME!! Every time it comes up for auction (which it is few and far between) it goes for crazy money. Again I am impressed with your outstanding collection

I love it too... be patient... they turn up about once every 2 -3 years. As a frequent under-bidder, I am keenly aware of this Mike: Yankees is the toughest of the three, as you probably already know... I saw an image about a decade ago, but neglected to save it. Now I can't even remember it... a neat Uncle Sam variation, I think. The availability ranking definitely goes... 1. Dodgers 2. Giants 3. Yankees |

I love this thread. Here is the large Minnesota Twins pennant. I no longer own this pennant as I sold it a couple years ago but it was a good 6 feet if I remember correctly.

I have an old printout, which I scanned. Not a great pic, but it'll have to do for now. I can't even remember where this picture came from.....could have been ebay.

thanks so much for posting that link. One of the main reasons I joined N54 was to learn and to educate myself. I have not been let down! Until this discussion of the 3D pennants, I wasn't even sure they were "real." They are so amazing (and the ones I've seen have been in such great condition) that I thought they might be more recent fantasy pieces....but, apparently not. Maybe I'll stumble across the Giants version someday (in a small antique store!)..... How cool would it be to find this?: A 1963 trade ad for Angelus shows more than 100 mascots, a Who’s Who of Division I giants that includes the Duke Blue Devil, the Purdue Boilermaker, USC’s Tommy Trojan, Oregon State’s Benny Beaver, the Georgia Bulldog, the Oklahoma Aggies, and many more. Even Pomona’s Cecil Sagehen—Oswald’s oldest rival—is an Arthur Evans original.

Thanks, Rob for finding that image. Even though it's blurry, you can see how incredibly cool that pennant must be. |

Rob, those two 3-d pennants are/were mine, that is the old floor of my basement. Same Giants pennant Mark has pictured (on my pool table). I sold the Yankees pennant about 10 years ago and kept the Giants.

I knew I had a picture somewhere but I thought it was going to be an all day endeavor finding it. As it turned out, the search took all of five minutes . I might have a better picture in an old auction catalog, but I'm not sure I want to open that can of worms. Mike, you're just lucky there was a Giants pennant with the Yankees.....otherwise, no way would I have saved it!

Here's one I wish I hadn't let get away. The Holiday Casino in Reno used to have excursions to Giants games. The orange pennant was apparently from Opening Day 1962....Marichal threw a complete game, 3-hit shutout and Mays homered ...too bad the owner wrote on it but a cool pennant, nonetheless.

I saw quite a few Cubs pennants in the thread but didn't see this one. In fact I've had a hard time finding it anywhere, I did a brief search awhile back trying to date it but came up empty. Part of the problem is its condition, I'm not sure what the original colors were (I'm guessing blue, but who knows?).

It was indeed blue. Too much sun over the years has turned it grey, as is typical for these blue pennants with the thinner style felt. For whatever reason, the thin blue felt didn't hold its color, unless very well protected/preserved.

Through the years, I have had many blue pennants that faded to gray. Below is far from the worst. I usually look for upgrades and sell the inferior example on ebay for whatever I can get.

That's a toughie. Nice example too... I do the same exact thing... upgrade when a good one surfaces, and get what you can for the lesser example. I usually get killed on the deal, but guess that's the price you pay for being picky Last edited by perezfan; 03-06-2014 at 12:10 PM. |

We kind of just had this discussion with the 1936 Yankees pennant with this similar design. There was a 1919 Chicago White Sox version like this in the Halper collection and the newest I have seen is the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals if I remember correctly. There was a similar, but different 1944 Cardinals and Browns version as well. Very tough design in general, but you usually see the Cardinals versions more than others

1913 Spokane Pennant
Here's an oversized pennant which I believe to be related to the 1913 Spokane Indians Northwestern League team. I believe that it is baseball team related, as opposed to just a pennant promoting the city, in that the "sunburst S" is also present on the sleeves of 1913 Spokane baseball jerseys.
The RPPC below includes future HOFer Stan Covaleskie, future Black Sox player Swede Risberg, and Ten Million, of Obak fame. |

That is beautiful! I'd have to agree that the sunburst definitely makes it a team pennant.

This LH batter is ubiquitous on Giants pennants....whether he is standing in front of the Golden Gate, a scroll, no background or whatever. Is this same silhouette used on other teams' pennants?
What?.....you don't remember the '65 Champions with "McCovery" on the team?

Yes... The Houston Astros used this Batter image alongside the Astrodome. Cleveland Indians also used the same Batter in their famous 1954 "Lopez Limited" Champions Pennant. But it's most commonly seen on Giants Pennants, as you pointed out above. Last edited by perezfan; 03-10-2014 at 09:49 PM. |

"Our" lefty batter was seldom shown in a stadium. In this pennant he was. This is a fairly tough pennant....the stadium motif is common, but usually with a different LH batter.

There's some incredible looking pennants in this thread.I'm not a pennant guy,but I picked up this mini pennant (4" x 1 1/2" inch).I was hoping someone could tell me if this is a common mini-pennant.I believe it's from the mid 1940's.

Your small pennant is from an un-cataloged set of Leader Candy co. pennants from the 40s.
