Default 1972 Topps uniform question

Posted By: judson hamlin

I'm usually on the pre-war BB forum, but I'm putting this set together on the side and was wondering what uni's are shown on some of the rookie players in this set. Alzado, Plunkett, Adams, Brockington, Hornsby and a couple of others have blue and white uniforms on that don't match up with their teams. Were these East-West or some other college all-star shots? Any info would be welcome. Regards.

Default 1972 Topps uniform question

I believe the uniforms were from the College All-Stars vs NFL Champions preseason football game that was played annaully from 1934 to 1976 (no game in 1974). The game was called the Chicago Charities College All-Star Game and was played at Soldier Field or at Northwestern University.

The game was the idea of Arch Ward, the Chicago Tribune sports editor, who by the way was also involved in starting the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

In the series the College All-Stars actually won 9 games.
