OT- Show me your Hank Aaron cards
Posted By: Chad
Leon, feel free to delete this--I know there's too much Barry Bonds on the board now. A tribute to the guy who held the reord with such dignity seems fitting today, though. (This isn't meant as a dig at Bonds who is the greatest hitter I've seen. My thoughts about Barry are conflicted and I'll let history decide his level of villainy or exoneration.) |

Classy and old school, I thought his message to Bonds was very generous and statesman-like. |

Those rootbeer cards are terrific. Were they attached to a 6-pack holder? |

Steve -- the tab was on the bottom and just about the same size as the card. It tapered toward the bottom and helped to keep the card in place in the root beer carton. |

Daniel, is it my computer screen, my eyes or is that a blue background on that 58 Aaron? |

Jeff- I think it is blue. There are a few color misfits around which have blue backgrounds instead of green. |

Jeff, definitely blue - missed the yellow ink pass. Easily my favourite card in my collection. |

How about Hammer'n Hank with the Indianapolis Clowns, or at least with Clowns owner/promoter Syd Pollack and the Flying Nesbitts. |

It's occurred to me that a really cool "set" to collect would be all the pitchers Aaron hit a HR off of. Ruth's victims cards might be impossible to collect and Bonds' too easy, but Hank's pitching victims would be just about right. |

Chad, that would be cool and I would bet it would be more difficult than you might imagine...how many September call ups did he hit one off that never got a Topps/Bowman card? First stop would be to find the list of those pitchers. |

I might look though it and see if it's possible. I don't think it would be too costly, if it's possible. I'm kind of selling myself on this. |

When I was 12, in the the summer of '73, my dad took me to a Braves game in Atlanta. My cousin gave up her box seats to us, and she and her fiancee sat in the bleachers. As luck would have it, Hammerin' Hank hit number 700 that night, and my cousin's finacee caught the ball. I still have an old newspaper clipping showing Hank and my cousin's fiancee. In exchange for the ball he got 700 silver dollars and and one of Hank's bats ... |
