Default Off topic: How to clean a wool jersey?

This is a bit off topic but I couldn't find anything on the Mitchell & Ness website. I'd like to clean my 1939 Gehrig jersey (Mitchell & Ness). The tag says do not dry clean. Should I clean it in warm water in the sink? Should I throw some Woolite in there?

Hi

I would hand wash to help protect it. Machine washing can be bad for it if done wrong.
I would recommend doing it via hand
Fill a sink or big bowl with clean, lukewarm water
Add a wool detergent, preferably a Woolmark-approved detergent.
Soak wool garment for 10 minutes
Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water
Rinse again in cold water.
should be flat-dried in the shade.

I'm surprised it says to NOT dry clean. I have owned dozens of M&N wool jerseys and I believe they all specifically directed owners to dry clean the jerseys.

Thanks, Jeff. That's what I was thinking. I'm going to give it a try!

Yeah, I was surprised it said not to dry clean. Guess I'll try hand washing and see how that looks.
