Nice!!! I was looking at those 1984 sterling silver "cards," and the following things occurred to me:
1. Topps did pretty damn well identifying superstars, as 8/10 are in the HOF -- the only two not in are Rose and Garvey. 2. How in the heck did it happen that 4/10 were Phillies??? 3. Those are pretty darn neat. kevin |

Man. Topps was pretty convinced kids would buy just about anything in the '80s!

I'm not sure that's correct. It was the adults buying / "investing" in anything and everything the card companies had to offer.

I was a kid collecting at the time…I don’t think any adults were investing in SportsTalk cards, were they?

Thanks for the post, Al. I'm really enjoying your oddball Topps collection. Especially since it comes from a period, the 1980's-1990's, where it would be easy to assume that Topps wasn't doing much. This is an excellent argument for the idea that Topps was really trying to come up with some variants that would simply be fun. Personally, I find all of these oddball items lots more fun than the present lineup of Chrome, Refractors, blue/red/pink/camo etc. that Topps is producing. I know that we have some other options, but nothing like this.

While it won't affect me, as I do not buy or collect modern, Topps will be missed. To me, it's kind of like when Vin Scully retired. He was there all my life, and years before I was born. Same thing with Topps. Sad to me...

I have dozens of Topps display boxes and wrappers from a 50 year run (1951-2000) except 1952, 1954 and 1955...I filled in those years with Bowman display boxes...but some of the non-traditional display boxes are my favorites...here is one of them...the 1973 Topps Candy Lids shown with a couple of the candy tubs
