Joltin Joe with his usual sour stare. I've yet to see a signing pic where he is smiling. I presume the men with him are the help taking tickets, handling items and shooing people away if they linger too long. The one on the left would bust your kneecaps if you mentioned Marilyn or Mickey Mantle.

Was Joe really as cold as people say? The more I learn about him the less I wish I would have read. The Mick had his demons but it seems like he at least appreciated his fans for the most part.

The one time I met him at an autograph show he was as surly as ever. I had him sign a picture that Ted Williams had already signed and he started complaining about it. After a few minutes he finally signed it and shooed me away.

joe was sort of emotionless evertime I saw him. ted williams was a real jerk. he would take a bat and intentionally slam it on the table. he would roll a ball and not even look up at you....unless you were a young girl, then he was all smiles. I remember being about 12 and thinking "man he was mean!". the mick was a real gentleman. the last time I saw him he was charging $9 an autograph. he talked to everyone. I had a book that showed him hitting that record setting distance for a home run and he wrote the distance on there without me even asking. he was up there with brooks robinson and billy herman as the nicest I ever met. when I heard about the ted williams cryogenic head drama I thought "ooh there is such thing as kharma".
