Best Acquisition for 2006

I know we have all acquired a number of great items in the past year, but what would you single out as your best collecting acquisition for 2006? And, just as importantly, is there an interesting story attached to the card/item?

For me the T222 of Walter Johnson was my hands-down favorite. Because of its scarcity (and cost), it is one of the two cards in the set I thought I'd never acquire. However, the card collecting gods smiled down on me when Richard Wong and I started negotiating a trade, plus cash. We sealed the deal, and now the Train sits here in Pennsylvania.

My second interesting pick-up was a W600 of Oscar Jones, who was born in Chester County, PA (where I live). It would be a strong EX, except for a tiny pinhole in the top, right border. I have Tony and Rose Carafiel (two of the nicest people in the hobby) and Wayne Varner to thank for this one, acquired at the recent Reading Show.

Nothing overly interesting about the acquisition. I played in a father's day poker tourney, finished 2nd, and used the earnings to pay for a large portion of the card.

I have been searching for a quality Gandil for 4+ years, and to get such a clean example with a framed back was a happy day.

Wow Mike - I'm not sure how to respond to this because my collection kind of exploded into different types in 2006. Prior to that I had kind of putzed around with mainstream tobacco issues of Detroit players. So I won't answer the question directly as asked, but instead note that in 2006 I got my first ever card of the following issues:

Wow. That's a lot of added types. As to most significant? A shorter list, with reasons:

- N172 Ganzel - first N172 and I'd looked a long time
- E97 McIntyre SGC 50 - my first higher end and scarcer card. I opened it and thought "I don't ususally get these cards - other people get these cards." Still thrilled.
- E97 BW Rossman SGC 20 - my first really scarce/unusual type
- N28 Annie Oakley - because I'd tried for so long to find one I could afford
- E-Unc Herp's card - reasons described in another thread
- 1933 Goudey Ruth Red - first Goudey, first Ruth, and I wanted one for years.

Finally, I picked up a cabinet of the 1890 Young Ladie's Baseball Club. I've posted scans every chance I've had, so you've all seen it. It is probably something like my favorite, most significant, or whatever. Awesome.

Nice thread Mike. Sorry if I kind of hijacked it or didn't answer within the meaning of the question. Just too much in 2006 to narrow down.

It's also worth noting that, as regards my shorter list of more significant cards, each and every item came from someone on this board either via BST or their "for sale" web site. Not one ebay or otherwise sort of anonymous pickup in that second list. Says a lot for this board.

I know I've showed this on the First January Pickup Thread but it has to be my best though the 1911 Zeenut Weaver and the 1911 Obak Weaver are close seconds.

1915 Zeenut McMullen (highest SGC graded example).

My Best Acquisition for 2006 (that will go in my collection)was a PM1 Matty because it got me hooked on Pins! Plus I always wanted a PM1.

My best acquisition for 2006 (That I will not keep in my collection) was a T207 Red Cross. It is nice just to hold one in person for a while.

This is easy for me to answer. It's my 1907 Fun and Frolic with an Indian Ball Team book. I had been searching a very long time to find this book and the best part about it was that I got it cheap because it was listed poorly and my major competition for Nebraska Indians items either didn't see it or didn't need it.

My Cobb Bat On was the years nicest and most expensive snag. It was also the last of the four Cobbs I needed for my T206 subset.

I picked up some nice vintage in 06 including a 14'CJ W.Johnson, E98 Mack with blue background, and 35'Chicle Nagurski.....but in terms of best pick-up it's gotta be this rose. THREE years searching for an example uncut and in this kind of condition, and somehow managing to not get outsniped! When you wait so long for a card, it sure is sweet!!!

I acquired the other half of a small Richmond, Virginia find in 2006. There were 85 t205s and t206s in the lot. These were actually dug out from a kitchen trashcan at the seller's uncle's house. Here are a few of better ones.

Those last two cards of Wesley's and Jim's are just exceptional, and if ever a card could be called a cornerstone of a collection - surely the N172 Wright is it.....while the E98 Young is an absolute screamer. If borders are possible that wide all round, surely every other E98 card I've ever seen has been trimmed post manufacture.....?

In some ways, my best acquisitions would have to be the N172 McPhee and Cuban HOFers I picked up to bring my HOF collection as close to completion as possible. But I think these two are the cards I will enjoy the most:

Guys,

I picked up a '33 Goudey Jimmy Foxx in the scarce 1st series in good condition for only $250. This is a very significant card. Double xx came up as a catcher and this was the first time he was listed on a card as a First Baseman. As a matter of fact in the '34 Diamond set he was listed as a catcher again.
