Default Monday Nite TRIVIA quiz......CHICAGO

Posted By: Pennsylvania Ted

The National is back in Chicago this Summer......and, that is great.

What is even greater about Chi-town, is the music of the Jazz-Rock group that originated in Chicago.
The CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (CTA) 1st released their album in the Spring of 1969. Most people
remember this fabulous band as "CHICAGO".

CTA's album signature Song was...."Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is ?"

1st quiz....Why did CTA change their band's name to "CHICAGO" ?

2nd quiz....What is the real meaning of the CHICAGO's album signature Song...."25 Or 6 To 4" ? ?

1. They were sued by the actual Chicago Transit Authority.

2. The way I hear it is that it is about somebody "burning the candle at both ends" (as in "trying hard to stay awake", etc.). The title should almost read "25 (or 26) Mintues to 4:00 A.M."

I have idea as to the answers but that album is great. I collect albums/records and have the 1st 5 Chicago albums. Totally different sound from the familiar sound they had the late 70s and 80s......

OH.......matter of fact............I'm spinning Gordon Lightfoot's album called "Gord's Gold" as I type this.............Great

Yes, a totally different sound. Much better than the "wimpy" Peter Cetera stuff. It reminds me of what happened to Genesis after Peter Gabriel left and Fidgety Phil Collins took over the helm.

Ted, if you like Chicago, you must also be a fan of Lighthouse. Much along the same lines as BS&T and Chicago, but, imho, more talented. They were a Canadian group that were around during the same wonderful period in music. Their drummer lives in my hometown. Unfortunately, Chicago lost Terry Kath to a game of Russian roulette and Lighthouse lost their talented lead singer Bob McBride to an extensive heroin addiction.

Daryle,

Lightfoot is the best songwriter in the history of mankind--Bob Dylan himself said so! I've been a fan of his ever since I was old enough to figure out how to drop a needle onto a 33.

Jodi, I would agree with Dylan. Lightfoot is great. I just bought 4 Lightfoot albums Sunday. I can just see Gordon and Croce sitting together...........wouldn't that be amazing?

Actually, Croce got his big break through Gord's bassist John Stockfish! Small world, and I love Croce nearly as much as Gord. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell are also at the top of my list.

To fine tune the answer up there, the municipal CTA threatened legal action against the musical CTA, and with that, and their success with that first album, the musical CTA decided to change their name rather than get mired up in a legal action.

And Robert Lamm's lyrics and song name reference the artist's efforts at 3:35am or 3:36am... a bit before 4am being a good creative crunch time for a musical artist.

I wore out my first CTA album and my first two second silver albums out... played them continuously over a stereo through big speakers in our basement, as my buddies and I shot pool, talked crap, played cards, talked more crap... good times.

For star of the class, and I don't know the answer to this, but 'doesn't anybody know' what the meaning is behind Questions 67 & 68??? What was that about? I was a DJ, I know a lot of the stuff, piles about McCartney being dead, but no idea about Q's 67 & 68.

You guys are the TRIVIA KINGS this nite.....over the years, I have heard the craziest
explanations on "25 Or 6 To 4".
But, you guys have thre correct meaning behind those lyrics.

Yes, I do really love all of CHICAGO's songs.....they hit the Rock scene when it was at it's zenith.

To refresh your minds here are the lyrics to......

CHICAGO's 2nd album......25 Or 6 To 4

Waiting for the break of day
Searching for something to say
Flashing lights against the sky
Giving up I close my eyes
Sitting cross-legged on the floor
25 or 6 to 4
Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take
Should I try to do some more
25 or 6 to 4
Feeling like I ought to sleep
Spinning room is sinking deep
Searching for something to say
Waiting for the break of day
25 or 6 to 4
25 or 6 to 4

CHICAGO's Beginnings album......Questions 67 and 68

Can this feeling that we have together
Oooh, Suddenly exist between
Did this meeting of our minds together
Oooh, Happen just today, somewhere
I'd like to know,
Can you tell me -- please don't tell me
It really doesn't matter anyhow
It's just that the thought of us so happy
Appears in my mind, as a beautifully mysterious thing

Was your image in my mind so deeply
Was your image in my mind so deeply
Oooh, other places fade away
blocking memories of unhappy hours
Oooh, Leavin' just a burnin' love
I'd like to know,
Can you tell me -- please don't tell me
It really doesn't matter anyhow
It's just that the thought of us so happy
Appears in my mind, as a beautifully mysterious thing
Yes it does now baby

Can this lovin' we have found within us
Oooh, Suddenly exist between
Did we somehow try to make it happen
Oooh, Was it just a natural thing
I'd like to know,
Can you tell me -- please don't tell me
It really doesn't matter anyhow
It's just that the thought of us so happy
Appears in my mind, as a beautifully mysterious thing
Yes it does now baby
Questions 67 and 68

Here you go FRANK, try figuring this one out.

Enjoy,

TED Z

I was at a CHICAGO concert in their early days (very early 1970's).

Then we saw them here in Pennsy in 1992 at the Valley Forge Music Fair (4th row seats).
Some different faces, but they had not missed a beat in those intervening 20+ years......
Great Sounds.

As long as we are getting into Rock n Roll trivia -
two questions, one I expect to get answered quickly, the other one is a toughie.
1 - Where did the Beatles play their last concert?
2 - What was the highest paid act at Woodstock?

After all, they did a concert on the Abbey Road roof c. early 1969 but wasn't their last concert with paid attendance at Candlestick Park?

Rich,

1. Candlestick Park

2. Ravi Shankar (as far as I know, the ONLY paid act).

Candlestick is correct.
Shankar is not.
As far as I know most/all the acts at Woodstock were paid. I saw at auction years ago Janis Joplin's Woodstock contract. She is not the trivia answer.

I knew this would be a tough one .
The answer kinda surprised me too, when I had read it some years ago. Though they were very big at the time.

It couldn't have been CSNY, as it was only their second gig.

I doubt it was the Dead.

Just did a google search and the first site I found also says it was Hendrix.

By the time the concert had gotten underway, the site was virtually impossible to reach by car, and many performers flew to the site by helicopter. Hendrix and his band ended up making the trip in two station wagons. He was unhappy about the media reports of the size of the gathering, and by 4:00 on Sunday, was refusing to play. The fee, $18,000, was small by his standards, though he was the highest-paid performer at the festival.

EDITED TO ADD ANOTHER

The headline act at Woodstock was Jimi Hendrix. it stated in his contract that no other band would follow his act. and he was also the highest paid performer too

If your information about Hendrix is correct then the book or magazine article I read was wrong, but I did read a story that said that Blood, Sweat and Tears was the highest paid act.
I just read that Hendrix got $32,000 and was the highest paid.
There are conflicting stories on the web, one says $18K, one says $32K.

Well, Santana hadn't been around very long, so they probably wouldn't have charged much.

Let's see...other "they's" .... why can I only think of solo acts now?! Blast! Sebastian (resplendent with LSD-induced drool crust at the corner of his mouth), Havens, Guthrie....groups, darn it, groups....call me Cobb's nefarious biographer, I'm Stumped.
