Default 1912 La Azora Cigars Detroit team schedule

Posted By: Jeff

Hello,
I am looking to see if I can get any information on the La Azora Cigar company, I know they were around from at the least 1908-1912, but I can find no more information on them. I have seen in a picture from 1908 Bennett Park (Tiger Stadium) an advertisement in the left field corner saying "Home of La Azora the Cigar of Cigars 50 to every player scoring a home run." The 1912 date comes from a Detroit team schedule for the 1912 season I have, with a picture of Ty Cobb on the other side. The card measures 3.5" + 5.5"
I was wondering if anyone has seen any other type of cards, Post cards, Schedules or whatever with this ad on the back or front? Where they only issued for Detroit or did other teams have this advertisement as well for their season schedules of 1912 or any other years?
Any ideas on how were they distributed?

Jeff,

Sorry - no help on your questions. But I am a big Tigers fan - can you tell me the source of the newspaper photo? It's pretty cool, and I'd like to look up the full version if it's online somewhere.

Thx,

J

Lew Lipset had one in his April '05 auction, but it pictured Cobb sliding, not fielding. Lew said its the only one he'd seen, so it must be pretty rare. http://www.oldjudge.com/archive/200504/baseball/names/116/

Thanks Glen. Wasn't advertised as a postcard? I think that might be the reason I didn't sell the farm to buy it.....I knew I had seen that name though...much obliged for the help...

Hi Leon,
It could be that these Cigars where so bad that no one wanted to hit a home run back in the early days for fear of getting 50 of them. In the same book I mentioned above there is a picture of a large ad on the left field wall for Turkey Red Cigars and a different ad for La Azora Cigars on the right center field wall that is from 1911. With all of the other tobacco companies of that time making cards it makes you wonder why this company didn't. The reason for advertising in Detroit at that time makes sense because of Detroit being near or at the top of the standings for a few years.

Thank you Glenn did that card sell for $750? That is a really great picture so there are at least 2 different Cobbs out there and that one has a different back then the one I have. It also says that it was compliments of the La Azore factory of Detroit, Michigan and is the road schedule and mine is the home schedule. So they are a pair, but are they the only pair? Who has the other half anyone know, hopefully they are tired of looking at it. Well the Lipset auctions explains why they were advertising in Detroit at the time.

Jeff, the card sold for around $900. You got a great deal on yours. I saw it on Ebay and past on the BIN. Still don't know why - low on money at the time, but that's no excuse. As to the other one, I consider it a wonderful type piece which will be in my collection for a long time.

Thanks Glen for all of the information on these. Did you know the year of yours before the posting on ebay? I almost passed on it as well. I seen it when it went up and emailed the seller to see if he would come down on his price. I came back after an hour or so and bought it after the seller declined.

I am not looking to start a riot with this question and I know everyone here has there own opinion of what the definition of a Baseball card is. But I ask this, if pieces of card board boxes, Post cards, Score cards (W530) and Game cards can be catalogued as baseball cards, what is the difference with a team schedule that has a makers name and address on the card. Could this card get a T rating? I really don't know but I am curious.
