Default Show me your GC Alexander items in your collection

I've recently gained a desire to want to acquire some Grover Cleveland Alexander pieces. I am from Syracuse, NY, and I like to collect players or pieces that have a local connection. Well, Old Pete played for my hometown Syracuse Stars in 1910. He won 29 games that season, and didn't allow a run in the final 52 innings he pitched. I've been looking at cards of his, there's not all that many to choose from, and they seem to be out of my price range. But anyway, I'd still love to see what others have! The 1922 E121-120 is still relatively affordable, the 1940 play ball even more so. I love the story of him striking out Lazzeri in the 1926 WS. One of the most undervalued players considering he is one of the greatest lifetime pitchers. Maybe it's because half his photos look like he is balancing a stove top jiffy pop popcorn bag on his head.

Whoa, that is an awesome card Brian!

Posting a few of my favorites, but was going to suggest the E253 that Brian L posted as a cool, fairly inexpensive GC card to go after- one of my favorite card images!

Here's a few others that haven't been posted.

What a timely thread! I just got this back from SGC this week. The package took a long journey to get here and I was afraid it was lost. My vintage collection focuses on Cubs notable players and hall of famers, so this was a necessary addition. It is my only one of him, and there aren’t many available in the Chicago variety (even this one, the card says Chicago but the uniform is Philly).

Edit: I have zero idea why this image is appearing sideways. Oh well.

I always thought that many of the players in the W515 set, including Alexander, could have been arch villains in 1930's era comic books.

Kind of sad story. Alexander struggled with alcoholism and epilepsy post retirement and had trouble making ends meet. He is shown here working in a carnival telling stories about his career.

Luke, any idea why your very nice 1924 Diaz card received an "A" grade instead of a numerical grade?

Mac, I'm really liking your rare blue-green HAJ back, despite the card's condition.

therajah, that is one heck-of-a nice Wm. Paterson card!

Well, I don't have any of his cards. Just about everyone else, but not him. Really don't know why that is. I humbly offer this link to his biopic from 1952 instead, with Ronald Reagan as 'Ol Pete, and a whole raft of ballplayers:

Thank you, he doesn’t have many cards I was happy to add this one. He really flies under the radar of all time greats and doesn’t get a lot of hobby love.

Thanks Jstottlemire1. I like the card alot.

Val, I mis-posted. I meant to say it is either a D350-1-1 or a D350-1-2, but got a a little too cute for my own good. You are right, chronologically, it makes sense to call it a D350-1, which came from 1916 and reflects this card's origin. I meant to point out that Standard Biscuit issued both the m101-4 and m101-5 sets, and Alexander is identical in each--even the card number--so it is impossible to say which set gave us this one. That's why the sets really require further delineation than given by the ACC, and I call them mD350-1-1 and D350-1-2 (at least when I'm paying attention).

Just got this in an auction last weekend. Finished reading Wicked Curve (recommended) and realized how hard it was to get his signature. Sorry to the person I sniped in the closing 3 seconds

Last few low end pick ups were Grover/Cubs cards - nelsons and American caramel.
