I find it ironic that some people want to cancel "cancel culture".

I just learned that "Guardians" has a local history involving 100 year old statues on the road to the stadium area, and that they tried to find a name with the "dians" so they could maintain the logo style and nod to the old name.

I would still prefer the Spiders...their mascot could be Boris.

That name is the epitome of awfulness!!!!! What in high f_ck???????????

They should have no name at all, with just a bold, handwritten 'x' on the front of the jersey as a symbol of cancel culture. And perhaps any fan showing up in something with a Cleveland Indians logo on it should be immediately arrested.

newclevelandindiansuniform.jpg

Or better yet, call them the Cleveland Cortis, to memorialize the ITALIAN actor who played the fake, crying Indian in those memorable 1970 TV commercials, Espera Oscar de Corti. Quite apropos.

...I was really hoping they would go with Cleveland Steamers to really signify how this whole thing was handled.

Honestly, it's not that bad, just a bit generic. It looks like they're leaning into an Art Deco style, which will be a nice break from the usual.

Folks from Cleveland, did the campaign to pick the Spiders ever really take off locally? It always seemed to get good traction online, but never saw it mentioned in any Ohio media.

Look at what is happening here, changing names of streets, sports teams, removing statues, etc, on and on. We should be looking at China & see how they control their people, it’s happening here.

That's my point-- there is nothing real new here. The Stanford team changed its name from the Indians to Cardinals in 1972, and several other teams followed suit in the ensuing few years. There was no such term as cancel culture, now it's considered some kind of movement fostered by a sort of evil, anti-American, what have they done to my great country cabal. Oh the horror!

I wonder if we'd be having this discussion had the Indians agreed to give a percentage of their take every year to some indian tribes or charities for the supposed use of the term "Indians"? Would be interesting to see how the "insulted" ethnic group would have reacted had the team ownership just voluntarily decided to change the name, and then informed those tribes/charities they would no longer be getting any money from the team.

Maybe it's true that naming the team the Cleveland Indians was out of respect but it clearly didn't last. Chief Wahoo could not be confused with respect on any level in my opinion. I'm not sure why there's always resistance to ending bad practices. Why would anyone want to perpetuate Chief Wahoo? Or an association with it? Even though I don't like Guardians it is a clean break from all things Wahoo. Although I think Naps or Spiders would have accomplished the same thing.

If Cleveland is going to come up with a crappy new name, might as well go further and call themselves the “Mistakes”. Named after the cozy confines of the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium affectionately known as the mistake on the lake.

As far as tradition goes, I don't think a name change really matters. So many teams in all sports have moved over the years and change their names to align with the new city (and if they don't it seems odd) and so many many players change teams every year that they don't even know who they're playing for.

I don't like the new name. If they were going to go with something boring then they should have just renamed the team the Cleveland Meh's.

The name isn't great - a tribute to bridge pillars?!? - but, at the end of the day, I don't care. The owners are free to do whatever they want with the name.

I was at Progressive Field tonight. When they announced the new name before the game, most of the crowd booed. I don’t care either way. But I can tell you after living 25+ years overseas, my experience back in the country is everyone is afraid….. about everything. Thank god for baseball though. Come October 4 we are leaving and will be back first week of April for the next season.

Why stop there?

Minnesota Twins is offensive to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
San Francisco Giants is offensive to Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol.
Buffalo Bills is offensive to Deblasio, Gates, Clinton and Cosby

I’m not a fan of it, both the decision to change and the new name. I thought Guardians was lame when the Space Force took it, and still do.

My first thought when I read this on the internet was, "What a stupid name". Teams should let the fans come up with a name. Oh well.

By THEY you mean the few people that object to everything and anything and the gutless corporations just cave in. The name change doesn’t bother me at all. I have quit watching baseball two years ago. They can all go to hell!

But when you drill down, and see what's happening all around, it has nothing to do with name changes. These people calling for name changes don't give a damn about the names. Their goal is to get you to conform and think like them.

Let me give you a good example. How many liberal politicians called for a mask mandate and then were photographed in public without a mask when they thought no one was looking? Many of them. It wasn't about masks. It was about compliance.

But it is what it is. What can you do? So, I try to find humor in their dumbass ways. After all, this is the same group of dumbasses that think there are more than 2 genders.
Shouldn't the state of Indiana have to change their name now? What about Indianapolis? Indian Wells, CA? Indian River, FL? Where does it end?

You may want to re-examine your assumptions here. There is certainly still significant poverty in native communities, but tribes are considered sovereign nations and in many states are quite rich due to operating casinos and other businesses. Here in Oklahoma, our governor had the brilliant idea that he would renegotiate the gaming compact with the tribes to increase the revenue for the state. The tribes basically told him to f--k off and made it stick. The tribes are probably the most powerful political constituency in Oklahoma behind the oil and gas industry. So, throwing a little charity their way under the assumption they'll be grateful for your largesse may fail spectacularly.

Funny (now) story. My wife is an Ohio girl and while I am not originally from there, it is where my family lives now. A number of years ago, on a visit, I (without even thinking) bought an Indians ballcap with the Chief Wahoo logo on it. When I got back home (without even thinking) I wore it out in public, I got a lot of dirty looks. Needless to say, the hat was relegated to yardwork duty and, within a year, was in the trash.

As for the name, I love it. Cleveland is a great town and the Guardians of Transportation are a significant local landmark. They are part of the Hope Memorial Bridge which connects the Ohio City neighborhood to downtown. The ballpark sits at the east end of the bridge. My wife and I were back there a few weekends ago for a wedding. As is our habit, we went to Ohio City for lunch and a visit to the Market Garden microbrewery (which uses a Guardian in their corporate logo.) There was a little art fair going on in a plaza across 25th Street from the West Side Market and there was a lot of Guardian inspired artwork on display. I even bought this t-shirt:

It really made me realize how much the Guardians of Transportation are part of Clevelands identity.

It seems like for every tradition in this country, there is somebody intent on tearing it down.
They weren't named after Sockalexis. Otherwise, they would have been called the Cleveland Socks.

I will always refer to them as the Indians.
I will always refer to the Washington football club as the Redskins.
Same for all other changes.

And I will ALWAYS stand for our National Anthem.

That's just me.
Bob
Besides, the Guardians? What a horrible name.

I am sure that you know that your post is disingenuous BS. Senator Robert Byrd was a member of the KKK in his youth, later calling it the biggest mistake of his life. He renounced the KKK, racism and segregation. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a traitor, an unrepentant racist and a sociopathic murderer.

More disingenuous than your BS post?

You think political reasons might have been why Byrd renounced the KKK, racism and segregation?

You are the one who compared him to the author of the Fort Pillow massacre and the Grand Wizard of the KKK. I am not sure that Senator Byrd was too concerned about “political reasons”considering that his state, even today, is more than 93% white. So President Biden was photographed with Senator Byrd. That proves exactly what? Shall I post the dozens of photos of Trump with known racists, insurrectionists and pedophiles? To what end?

Can't reason with stupidity.
