I've never started one of these monthly threads before. Here's two late-career Kaline cards for my set. (13 down. 9 to go)

Potpourri, all of them probably actually April pickups - from my LCS. Their recent addition of $3, $5, and $10 boxes which now include vintage has served me well:

I'm a big fan of the '75 Topps All-Star cards, especially for the Reds players (Morgan, Rose, Bench).

Nice cards!

I realize that it's a matter of taste/preference, but most of the color combinations in the 75 set are BLEH! to me. The Yellow/Red cards, however, are awesome.

As a kid, I used to shun "last" cards because I got the idea somehow that they only showed old players, washed up fat players, players past their prime. But into my adulthood as a collector, it slowly dawned upon me how historically significant many of them are. It took a lot longer for me to realize how few players - even bonafide superstars - got "career capper" cards in the fashion of this '69 Mick. That was a mistake, of course - as Topps and Sy Berger thought Mantle would be playing after he reported to spring training that year - but alas, it was not to be.

This one had been calling my name at the LCS for awhile now. I suppose the chief complaint would be that it shows a bit of tilt on the border s-s, but that doesn't really bother me. Between tilt and centering, ‘69 can be a real pain. I decided at some point in the last few years that image and print quality were my two top criteria for vintage, with a preference for cards that are devoid of major creases. This one fits the bill nicely there.

“All OC cards are equal, but some OC cards are more equal than others.”

It was better the first time they used this photograph on his 1965 card, but still love this one, and the way 'The Say Hey Kid's' card prices have been soaring into the wide blue yonder lately, I figured it was a good time to pull the trigger...

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

Nice one! I will agree that the purple and the flag design of '65 Topps is the better frame for this picture, but this ain't a bad Willie card at all. I used to have a raw one that was about EX, but traded it to the LCS for something or another back a few months ago.

I probably could have found one twice as nice for half the price, but still . . . .

It still confuses the heck out of me seeing old clips or pictures from the 60's of 'Pops' patrolling the outfield. For my generation, he was the quintessential first baseman...not an outfielder!!!!!

And that's a very cool card!

Just picked up 37 TCMA 1975 1924-25 Senators cards today. I have 24 now and am hoping with these additions I will be able to complete the set. Probably the closest I will come to having any Senators from their first championship year.

I like how many of these players look like they are in a constant state of constipation.

1976 Goof's Pants Satchel Paige. Typically, when one sees these at all, they are autographed. However, according to an old 54 thread, a few sets were issued without the auto. I am hoping this is real and not a reprint lol.

Here's a couple recent adds. I think both have very nice eye appeal for the grade:

If these are wrong(backs), I don't wanna be right.

This 1974 Dave Winfield #456 Rookie Card is in sweet shape, and having the wrong back could possibly make it a 1/1 RC kinda thing, which is way cool, and the 'Tom Terrific' is simply one of my all-time favorite cards...

1974winfield456seaver80wrongbacks.jpg

Some research:
The fronts of the cards are oriented properly, which means the Seaver back (#48 Dick Sharon and #69 Del Unser) has been one-eightied. In looking through images of uncut sheets on-line, none of the three different card backs are players printed on the same sheets as the Seaver/Winfield cards. Of course, the images I saw were only half-sheets (slits?), which may or may not be a factor. I know 1974 was rife with wrong back cards. IIRC, ‘The Card Collector's Company’ catalog way back when used to sell them/list them with their 1974 offerings.

Pickups from a local show.

the 52 Cavaretta leaves me only needing Mays and Boyer to finish 1-310.

A 53 Groat with the Black Text variety, almost finished that variation run.

a tough 1950 Bowman no copyright. I had a 51 Rolfe but it's trimmed, needed the 52's for the cream stock variation run.

Some out of focus 57's including a red tint Dick Williams (1957's come in multiple obvious tints) that were $2 a pop.

61 Larsen was $6, 66 Jackson was $75. I hate the 66 Jackson, it's rarity reputation is a myth.

The stack of Post's were $1-$2 each.

The Trodden may or may not be autographed, but 50 cents for a Washington maybe signed seemed worth it.

The 1911 Obak was $20, which is pretty good I think.

Two of my favorite players in decent mid-grade for fairly cheap prices. Couldn't resist.

An out-of-plastic experience...

I can't remember a time when so many ungraded cards were regularly appearing in monthly pickups threads. What a beautiful thing!!! Graded card prices are getting more and more ridiculous by the day, so it seems a lot of us are finding good buys in the non-plastic world, as well as in downtown slabville.

Depending on your perspective, here's a pretty cool miscut 1975 Topps #228 George Brett rookie card...

1975brett228RCmiscut.jpg

Sad thing is, save for bit of a corner bump/bend, it's in beautiful shape. Alas.

This is a 1971 Topps #603 Pirates 'Team Name in White' (not yellow) variation.

I first saw one about a decade ago at a show, and although the card was a 'Pooreo' (a 1971 Topps with too much white wear), IIRC the dealer still wanted a C-note for it. Told me, "You may never see another one." I had to pass.

It's a true variation, as it is not sun faded or missing the yellow ink from the entire card, and looks identical to all of the other Pirates Team cards from that year (with obvious yellow usage throughout) with the exception of the color of the word "PIRATES."

Graded card prices are getting more and more ridiculous by the day, so it seems a lot of us are finding good buys in the non-plastic world, as well as in downtown slabville.
That's what happens when you shut down PSA and then jack up the prices when they do reopen.

I'm only needing three from the '52 low numbers, and Mays and Boyer are two of the three. I think I'm a day late on the Mays.

Just added this sharp 6 to my Topps era HOF pitcher project.

26 down, 14 to go…

Yeah, Eckersley really does have the Eastwood scowl going. Wouldn't have wanted to face that at the plate.

Some great cards...loving the 65's, and that Mantle is a burner...

I'm continuing to feed my obsession with these 53-55 Dormand's...up to 11. Going to be a slow build, glad I got the Mantles out of the way...

You and me both sir. The Mays is now outside the range I consider reasonable for a second year Mays, even though he's my favorite of the post-war stars. Boyer is in one of the SP rows, I haven't wanted to pay $25 for him but I'm about to give up and just get it.

Default May Pickups

Maybe not as cool as Jolly's Brett or one of his patented PSA 9 MC's, but I picked up this Reggie on Saturday for a fraction of the price of a comparable EX-MT range card. I'm choosing to look at this as not only MC, but more a "thickborder" (thickburger?) card. That right side almost looks like vanilla cake frosting. :-) There is also a hint of the printer's mark / sheet guide on the fat right border, which is a nice touch.

Re-evaluating the conventional hobby wisdom on what is a desirable card with this one. Perfectly centered gems from the 60's may be beautiful, but I can tell you for sure at least this one ain't altered...

This one is graded MC, but it feels more OC to me. Regardless, what's a few qualifiers among friends...

It could be MC on the back.

It's again probably borderline between MC and OC...I'm very pleased with the card for what I paid for it.

The back:

The back:

Yep, that's what got you the qualifier. I would agree they can be somewhat less than consistent with them, but that's definitely MC.
