Default Does It Really Matter Who Wins the All-Star Game

Posted By: peter chao

We all know that MLB has decided that the winner of the All-Star game will get hometown advantage in the World Series, but besides that, does the All-Star game mean that much anymore? Or is it simply another way for MLB and the owners to make more money?

Yes, the winning league gets home field advantage in the World Series. Too bad this wasn't the case when they played hard 25 years ago.

Peter....San Francisco was the winner, to the tune of an estimated $60 million. The past week, I've been to downtown twice, and the atmosphere can only be described as festive. Even Lefty O'Douls was jam packed (DON'T eat the spaghetti sauce !!)..Plus it's one of the few times you can actually walk across McCovey Cove, over a bridge of rubber rafts..

Mark,

I'm glad you attended the Fanfest, remember the All-Star game is being broadcast at 5:00 EDT on channel 2.

Couldn't agree with you more the All-Star game is making plenty of bucks for SF. But there was a time, when the AL and NL played just to have bragging rights. Carl Hubbell striking out 5 future Hall of Famers simply was evidence of NL dominance back then.

I'm not sure what evidence there is of NL dominance in the all-star games during that period. In the 1934 all-star game, Hubbell did perform magnificently, but the American League won the game 9-7 http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NLS/NLS193407100.shtml

The American League also won 8 of the first 11 all star games.

Max, he meant NL dominance during that inning and 2/3.

NL dominance, as opposed to dominance by Carl Hubbell. You know, the guy who actually struck out the five batters.

Edited to add: Goudeys. Helping. To. Bring. Country. Out. Of. The. Depression.

Peter, I have no idea if you're doing it on purpose, but you always make me smile.

Bud Selig is attending the All-Star game and was recently asked whether he will attend Barry's breaking of the record. Selig said he still hasn't made up his mind yet and commented that he did have a day job.

I still don't understand his excuse, since Mr. Selig doesn't do anything during his day job, he should have plenty of time to go to Barry's games.

The game was AWESOME! Not quite the same energy as the World Series in '02, but still a great event- despite Bonds being pulled after 2 AB's and having to see Beltran and Griffey all game.

The AS game matters to those of us who are AL fans and despise the NL and had to watch every year as kids and see the NL throttle the AL, year after year, even twice a year for a couple of years. I hope the AL wins 100 in a row

As long as they have interleague play, then the All-star game doesn't mean anything to me...

I respected the National League for the comeback in the 9th.
I mean bases loaded, 2 out, a great closer (not so great right now) If he walks u that's an easy run. But its hard to hit a gapper or down the middle against an almost invinicble team of all-stars. They gave it all. But the NL will win next year.
