I picked up this hoover high school senior class ring several years ago... it belonged to Ted’s classmate Gertrude “Gertie” Delahay. Gertie’s Son called me a few weeks back to let me know that he came across his mom’s senior yearbook, and gave me first crack at it.

22' x 28" heavy cardboard stadium sign. It appealed to me because:

1) Yago Sangria!

2) the idea of drinking sangria at frigid Candlestick.

3) 1984 was the year of "Hang in There." They started giving out Croix de Candlesticks to any hardy souls who stayed till the end of extra inning night games.

I was just able to pick up an item that combined my 2 favorite baseball subjects, Lou Gehrig and the NY Mets.
I was able to score a game issued base from the game baseball celebrated the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous speech. A video clip of the speech was played before the game in all the ballparks around the country. Players wore commemorative patches and the bases had special plaques on the sides.

GAR WOOD’S MISS AMERICA X U-10: I picked up this desktop plaque recently of the world famous Miss America X-10 race boat …I’ve been collecting 35 years and never seen one of these before. There were ten Miss America boats made and raced by Gar Wood, the king of powerboat racing from 1920-1933…This X U-10 was the last one and won the Harmsworth trophy twice in 1932 and 1933. It’s a remarkable piece well modeled, i.e. good sculpture work…It’s possible multiples were produced but I lean towards it’s a one off. I fine toothed it with a flashlight and magnifying glass and zero markings…no maker…no sculptor…I collect sports display antiques from 1880- 1940 of all sports from billiards to mountaineering…and sculpture is one of my hot buttons so this was a great find for me. It’s the only powerboat sculpture I own besides trophies.

c1905 Racycle Motorcycle Photo

Yesterday the Sacramento Antiques fair re-opened since the covid lockdown started…I think everyone was expecting an avalanche of great stuff…but no…the amount of dealers was a little sparse…and the quality wasn’t anything great…I didn’t find a thing…but at least it was something…we’ll worry about getting better later…just glad things are opening….So it wasn’t great…HOWEVER…Later I went to an antiques mall and found this photo of a c1905 Raycycle motorcycle…so I measured, photographed, and thanked the kid for getting it out of the case…and continued around the store…I enlarged the photos I took on my phone trying to see what make it was…you could barely make out the name but it looked like it said something cycle on the gas tank…I could kind of make out the word cycle in the last part of the name….but had to keep enlarging and guessing…I tried a few guesses on google. Finally the name Racycle came up and it matched…then it was just a matter of time before I found a photo of a Racycle and it all took shape…and I started understanding the photo and what I had…this is the third motorcycle photo I’ve gotten from the same seller…he’s one of those no-tech guys that doesn’t look stuff up… I generally like big photos at least 12” wide…so this is probably the smallest photo I’ve ever bought…but when you get back to the 1905 era that’s really early for motorcycles…and I don’t think there are lot of original ones around…admittedly I’m still learning about early motorcycles...and photos too for that matter…Some would not be happy about the worn frame…but that’s exactly what makes me happy…Finding a photo in the original frame like this with the original old wavy glass...makes it a lot more exciting than out of the frame…or in a new frame…you know from looking at the back it’s the real deal…

One of these Racycle motorcycles sold in Mecum five years ago in 2015 for...which was a giveaway compared to the c1912 Flying Merkel that sold the same year in Mecum for $423,500.00. Racycle and Flying Merkel were both made by The Miami Cycle Company of Middletown OH...Racycle started as a bicycle manufacturer...and like many bicycle makers they started adding motors...I believe Miami Cycle Company was later acquired by the Westfield Mfg. Co…It’s intriguing to me the orange paint on the Racycle that sold for $38,000.00, seen below…looks identical to the afore mentioned Flying Merkel that sold the same year…you can see photos of it in a feature I did on a Flying Merkel trophy…click here…

Really cool motorcycle photo, have you taken it out of the frame yet? I've found some interesting things behind photos I've bought. It's interesting how the front fender scoops outward behind the front wheel.

Not much of a story, just have 2 other knives that are similar, one of the 1914 Championship A's and the other is a bunch of all stars, the one I just picked up has presidents on the back including Lincoln as you can see

The knife with Cobb, Lajoie and the presidents was made by Novelty Cutlery of Novelty Cutlery postcard fame.

This is a circa 1930's-1940's original sign that originated from Pittsfield, MA.
The message says it all.
Perfect for my collection that includes a large sampling of vintage tickets.

Until a month ago, I had never heard of Wesleyan Academy and now I have 2 base ball items, from separate dealers dating to the 1870’s.
The first is a pen and ink drawing that features a base ball player. The majority of the autographs are from 1874 to 1878 and Lamb taught there during that time. I just can’t read the year in the drawing.
The second is a cabinet photo in front of the residential hall with all the students and staff. There are at least 4 players in uniform along with some others with bats. The penny farthing bicycles and numerous tennis racquets are also nice.
Happy to receive any info about the Academy or the images.
Wesleyan Academy was apparently the first coed residential academy and Rich Hall was built in 1868 to accommodate all the students.

Bruce- Is Wesleyan Academy the same school as Wesleyan University in Middletown CT? I used to own this cdv that was pictured in Rucker's cdv book. It was described as the 1868 Agallians of Wesleyan University. It's a great image that shows home plate and the pitcher's plate as well as the three bases. A fellow board member now owns it.

Gary, that is a great image. However, Wesleyan Academy is not Wesleyan University, it is more like a prep school. It is located in Wilbraham Mass.

I just picked up this great circa 1915 action photo of no-hit pitcher "Bullet" Joe Bush while he was a member of the Philadelphia A's.
The photo itself is a restrike, but the clarity is super...

Killer lot Bruce! I love those old graduation images that tell a story! Your's is quite unique!
I have an '88 Harvard graduation cabinet that is similar with guys in their baseball uniforms, track uniforms, football uniforms, rowing uniforms etc. I also have similar '95 Lafayette graduation cabinet. That was one year before they won the football National Championship. You can see the college pride in their smiles.
Those old cabinets are like a where's Waldo image. You could stare at them for hours!
