If you count what she spent on herself for Valentine's...then it's Valentine's day for me.

Otherwise...

I've spent more on cards, hands down.

The woman and I do not celebrate Valentine's Day. I think I'm lucky to have found such a girl.
Our birthdays are both in January, so that might have something to do with it!

Cards by a wide margin. Thanks Jeff, you may have guilted me into going out buying a more expensive gift.

BTW: What is your answer?

Guys,

I've spent $50 on my wife and 30 times that on cards. According to the Baseball Card Shop-owner I spoke with, that's the appropriate ration.

Valentine's gift has no chance of catching up..... especially with Mastro Auction ending soon and Barry's Auction to look forward to

You of all people should know better than to ask a question that undoubtedly calls for the invocation of the 5th Amendment.

more on the Valentine's Day gift by a narrow margin, but if you broaden the baseball card category to include memorabilia and autographs that tips the balance the other way

Nice try, Jim. Somehow I think PSA 8 E93 v. PSA 10 Hallmark is not an even trade...

Actually, Jason, I believe that was Homer Simpson who bought Marge a bowling ball with the name "Homer" stamped on it. Which, of course, led to the near-affair with Serge, the French bowling teacher...

Baseball cards - a couple hundred $
Valentine's Day Gift - 0$

(some of us don't have a Valentine )

Which means more $ available for baseball cards

What kind of question is that? That's like asking a crack addict if they'd spend more on food/clothes or CRACK?

5th amendment, hell I dont need to invoke it. My wife doesn't read this board, she doesn't even know it exists. If she did happen to find this board my screen name would all of a sudden become RICH KLEIN.

edited to add, see Rich Klein's response - I don't know Rich, but all of a sudden, I don't trust that guy...

I don't doubt you...I couldn't remember for sure, and was torn between Homer and Fred, and decided to go with Fred at the last minute...that is what I love about this Board...not only folks who share my interst in collecting, but also authorities in those aspects of pop culture that I am familiar with...

Homer did in fact buy Marge a bowling ball with his name on it, and Marge used it herself. Her bowling teacher, whose name was actually Jacques, was played by Albert Brooks. That's a first season episode, and they don't show those too often these days.

My wife and i agree not to spend money on Valentines day with the possible exception of a valentine's day card, so baseball cards win out if I find something I like.

Is this a rhetorical question?

Only real money spent on the woman was for the flowers. The dinner we would eat anyway (and I get to enjoy the meal as well) and I usually ingest the chocolates before I give them to her anyway.

So the answer is obvious.

Dan- where did they show that episode? I only watch the early ones; if it was on at 11:30 I'm long gone.

Getting back to Valentine's Day vs. baseball cards- cards cost thousands of dollars. How many roses can you buy your wife, no matter how much you love her?

Dinner w/wine estimate: $70.00
Gift estimate: $75.00
Total: $195

One card purchased 25 days ago in Mile High Auction: $4,900 (incl. vig)

Even with a deal I just finalized yesterday, my wife still won out (by a very narrow margin). I guess I owed her that much as my wife to cards ratio for Christmas was way out in left field (cards by a staggering margin - and I spent more on her for Chistmas than Valentines to boot).

(Just don't ask the question - what did you spend more on, Anniversary or cards? as I might be looking to one of you for a place to stay for a while).

...that presupposes that I actually remember my anniversary. When the lady at Shane Co. asked me when ours was the other day, I seriously drew a blank for a minute or two before 20 June popped into my head. I wasn't even sure if that was correct, but it turns out it was.

Back to the original question, though, I think I could easily rationalize the situation by explaining to homegirl that in terms of net expenses over the last month, she easily won out due to my breaking up and selling off of a vintage hockey set.

And because I'm feeling wildly romantic this Valentine's Day, let me again share my best advice for single/engaged guys: separate checking accounts.
