Was able to lock down #220 this morning. I sold this one away last year and am happy I am able to add it back to the collection!

Default 1941 DiMaggio GPC

Finally found the DiMaggio I was looking for.

While he was still basking in the afterglow of the streak:

This guy is buried in the Bennington, Idaho cemetery. Wonder if it's the same guy?

Wright, David Lane, b. May 22, 1929, d. Jun 26, 1967, Idaho Major US Air Force, Bronze Star Medal, Sec 3 Lot 472

I'm thinking it's him:

According to the site below, he corresponded with athletes, and his bio says in part: "...from the time he was a young man he kept copious journals. He loved sports, especially baseball and football...He also was a sports writer for the student paper...The scope and breadth is impressive due no doubt to Wright's compulsive saving, including letters he received as a child."

Nice research. I often wonder about the people they are addressed to when I buy them.

Thanks, all. If anyone has a 1941 season Ted Williams GPC, I would be interested. And, of course, a photo of the two of them from the same year. As long as I'm dreaming.

Default 1940 (probably) Burke Williams and D DiMaggio

These were both hanging on the wall of a bar in Oregon since 1940. I was able to find a photo of them on the wall, with Bobby Doerr in the middle. The Williams signature looked 1939-ish to me, but DiMaggio's first year with the Red Sox was 1940. Per Lance, the Burke stamp on the back dates them to pre-1942. Doerr lived a few miles down the road from the bar (still lives in Oregon), so I'm guessing the three of them were in the area on a visit.

Both photos obviously have issues. I cleaned some of the dried (beer?) residue off of Ted and flattened out most of it's possible early use as a coaster. Dom D is suffering from the acid cardboard backing from it's frame.

Thanks, Andrew. Since they hung together for over 70 years, I'm working on a single-frame display for the two of them for the man-cave. There originally was an 'in-action' Bobby Doerr photo between them. I did not end up with it, but picked up a different in-action Doerr to go between the two.

Here's a pic I grabbed from the YouTube video that shows the three pieces:

GREAT photos, Scott. I don't think I've ever seen the Williams.

Default Nolan Ryan signed personal check- very scarce indeed!

Not prewar, but I recently was able to cross another want off of my bucket list.
Many of you know that I've been an advanced collector of Nolan Ryan for a very long time (42 years in 2014- yikes!).

One item has been on my want list forever:

A signed Nolan Ryan personal check

Many years ago, I ran into a guy in So Cal that actually sold Nolan Ryan a set of furniture while he was playing for the Angels. He knew who Nolan Ryan was since he was an Angels fan, and was smart enough at the time to make a Xerox copy of the personal check. That's the closest that I've ever come to seeing one until now...

After all this time, one finally entered the hobby. This check has special appeal to me for two additional reasons:

It's twice signed, which is always a bonus.
Additionally, it was drafted on his Express Bank Account in 1996. At the time, Nolan owned two Express Banks and was also the bank President, but has since sold them.

Anyway, here it is and it's very scarce indeed.

Just got this back from the framer - 1940 signed D DiMaggio and Ted Williams Burke photos with unsigned Doerr in the middle (unknown photographer). The fuzzy pic is how the photos looked hanging in an Oregon bar for over 70 years - I bought the incorrect Doerr photo but decided to frame it anyway. Pic is a screen grab from a youtube video of a tour of the bar just before it closed in 2012. Makes me wish I was a Red Sox fan.

Thanks, yes - very happy with the results. The guys at Dick Blick are always great to work with. They were both baseball history-knowledgeable, and really got into the four projects we worked on. I'm sure the others will turn out just as nice.

Very sweet. Saw this card on eBay, and then saw how quickly the auction ended.

Thanks, guys. Forgot to mention that these are both feature paintings by Graig Kreindler. Luckily he did not have studies that paired up with any of my other autographs or I would be much poorer!
