Default Old UZIT Collection May Add to Checklist

Posted By: barrysloate

I was just going through an old folder and found a photocopy of 27 T206, all with UZIT backs, that were being offered for sale by old time hobbyist Jack Smalling in the 1980's. I thought I would list them here, as it might add to the known checklist. He wanted $1250 for all 27, and most were EX-MT or NR MT. I passed on them. Here's the group:

Abbaticchio, blue sleeve
Berger
Bradley, batting
Bridwell, sweater
Burch, throwing
Chase, holding cup
Conroy, batting
Jordan, batting
Lake, St. Louis (throw)
Latham
Leach, fielding
Leifield, batting
Manning, hands over head
Merkle, batting
Mullin, batting
Overall, bare hand
Pelty, throwing
Pfeister, throwing
Schaefer, Washington
Schlei, batting
Schulte, side view
Seymour, portrait
Steinfeldt, batting
Wagner, bat right
White
Wilhelm, batting
Willis, batting

I wonder if it is too late to call him. On second thought, I think I'll take them.

Jack Smalling of Ames, Iowa? He's famous to me since he invented the autograph checklist system for major leaguers. If you have ever seen an autographed 3x5 with a number in the top/middle and another at the top/right, they are marked using his system. He was also one of the first to sell home addresses of former major leaguers and a true pioneer in the hobby.

He should have held on to his UZITs, however. Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Barry,

Thanks for posting.

Berger must be Bergen (Catching).

Interesting in that the 27 subjects are split almost down the middle between 350/460 subjects and 460-only subjects. Also, none of the six superprinted subjects [Chance Yellow, Chase Blue, Chase Dark, Cobb Red, Evers Yellow, Matty Dark] appears. Maybe he was keeping the Hall of Famers for himself. (Willis was not elected until 1995).

Richard- I did know that Jack Smalling published a book with ballplayers' addresses to assist collectors who wanted to write to them for autographs. When he sent me the list of 27 Uzits, he also offered a partial T206 set, and then added he had 800 more T206 that he had yet to catalog, many with interesting backs. I can only imagine how many tough ones were in that group.

Scot- I looked again and the photocopy is clearly of Berger, Cleveland. Now, he didn't show the back of each card- the photocopy consisted of 27 fronts and one sample Uzit back, but according to him all 27 were Uzits. Did we find a new one?

barry- not to make you feel bad, but EACH card today would be worth $1250 at least, in the condition you said they were in...oops.

I'm aware they are valuable, but even if I had bought them, they would have all been sold within a couple of months. At the time I was afraid it was too big a group, and it would be difficult to find that many customers. Times have changed.

Barry,

I forgot momentarily about old Heinie Berger of Cleveland. My bad.

Brian Weisner, our resident "rare backs guy," is probably the person best equipped to advise which are known and which (if any) are new. I'm not really an Uzit expert--although I'm eager to learn more along with everyone else.

Great work, Barry!
Have you told Bill Brown yet? I'm wondering how this affects the Super Set.
My suspicion is that it makes quite an impact but don't know yet.

Many thanks,

all the best,

barry

I assume Bill reads the board and will copy the information. The amazing thing was the condition of them...a few were beaters but more than twenty looked pack fresh (give or take).

Ted Z. probably hasn't gotten back from the Reading show yet, but when he sees these he will have a field day!

Thanks Barry.
I emailed Bill just in case he hasn't had a chance to take a look.
I cursorily compared the bottom 12 or so from your list to my last update from Bill and
noted that one was a new find. And ONE at this point, with so much data in,
is very, very important. I'll be eager to see what Bill comes up with.

TRex will be excited, I am sure. And i will be excited even more if he finds
a couple of cards for me in Philly which will put me at the magical 500 206s.

It is a bit of a miracle to note that the Uzits were 'pack fresh'!
You're ready to collect the 206s again, aren't you?!

best,
barry

Barry- I've had so many sets of T206 over the years I've lost count, not to mention the thousands of singles. I think my T206 collecting days have past...but I still love them!

The Berger UZIT is accounted for by Brian Weisner.

My very first UZIT was acquired in the Cooperstown Show Auction that is traditionally held after this
HOF weekend show. Two Ex T206's were in the lot, the UZIT (Schaefer) and an EPDG (Rucker).

This was in the late 1980's, let's see who on this Forum can guess what I paid for this two card lot ?

Ted,
$60?

When I was a kid, back in the early 70's, Jack Smalling used to send around a mimeograph listing t206's for sale. They were organized by team and there were usually about 5 or 6 from each team. There was not a word about the condition or the back or about which of the player's poses was for sale. Prices usually ranged from $.75 for a Tubby Spencer to $2.50 for a Cobb. I don't remember getting a Uzit from him but I did pick up a very wide range of backs. Memories.

I compared your list of UZIT cards with Bill Brown's spread sheet (SS).

These three cards are not on his SS......Bridwell, Conroy and Latham.

No one has correctly guessed the winning $$ amount for my UZIT and EPDG.

It was because the first time I ordered a bunch of 1969's, I got a mess of the tough white letter variations. For some reason Jack had a lot of the white letter cards. The only other place I ever saw original White Letter variations were in Albany NY

No WINNER yet....

But, a couple of the guesses are quite close. While, I do not expect that they have to be
exact, I will let this guessing game go a little further.

And, the best guess receives a Vg common T206 of their choice (if I have it, if not, then
their 2nd choice).

I got a blank back, a Uzit, a Tolstoi, a Lenox and a Broadleaf (350) in a Robert Oser auction about 1994 for $185. The Tolstoi and Lenox were Tinker, with bat on and off. Wish I'd kept the blank back. The only card I've ever traded....

Thanks Ted!
This is the first time I've won anything since I won a Sharp TV in 1982.
I was the last to buy a ticket and I guess the fellow who reached in didn't
reach very deep!
And thanks for a VG commons, Ted. i'd like the elberfeld wash. portrait.
just teasin'---inside joke!
the covaleski or scott are in desperate need of upgrade so either would be
great!!
and thanks Barry S. for being such a good sport and offering such kindness
to the victor!
all the best,
Barry

I define "common" as not rare...and the Green Cobb isn't rare, hence it is a common. (Isn't that a logical syllogism?)
