According to Lee Allen in his book "The National League Story," Johnny Evers's name was/is pronounced "EE-vers, not EVV-ers." How 'bout that.

A lot of people mispronounce 'Honus' and 'Cicotte' as well.

How do you say 'Knute Rockne'?

I just found that out about 8 years ago. My friend is the great-great niece of Johnny Evers. She has just a few items from him, like a signed ball of the double play trio (heavily schellacked (sp)) and a custom engraved pocket watch that was given to Evers.

I've been told KIKI is pronounced like KYE-KYE or CHI CHI (like Delta Chi) instead of what I thought was KEE-KEE......anyone confirm or deny? Just sounds silly to me. Kee-kee is much better. I won't worry about his last name.............

I am familiar with Evers as his family owned a sporting goods store in Albany, NY as recent as the late 80's to early 90's. I've have always know it to be pronouced with a strong "E" sound. I would think the first inclination would be to prounounce it this way as in Christmas "Eve" with an "rs" on the end. Although, I realize there are some strang pronunciations.

I have heard it CY-cottie, CY-cot, SA-cottie, SA-cot, and lots of other ways. I thought it was CY-cotte but who knows?
I thought for 30 years that Knute Rockne's first name was pronounced "Newt" but discovered a few years ago that the family actually did pronounce it "Kanute."

Whenever he would bunt, the coach would yell: "Run S-cott!"

The following pronounciations were used by old-timers on "Glory of Their Times": CY-cottie, CY-cot

I've always pronounced Fatima "fa-teem-a", but I've heard other pronunciations.

Actually, I should be embarassed to admit this, but...while watching an old rerun of "Leave It To Beaver" the Kiki question was answered.

The "Beave" accidentally destroyed Ward Cleaver's autographed baseball which included an autograph by Kiki, whose name Ward pronounced like the word "sky."

So, if that is any indication...

BTW, the kids then tried to forge another ball and got caught when they failed to match the correct first and last names...

I'm obviously making good use of my free time.

"Kiki" is pronounced "Cuy-Cuy", as in "Cuyler", apparently - http://www.pubdim.net/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/C/Cuyler_Kiki.stm has more info.

I've always assumed that "Fatima" was pronounced "fat'-im-a", but that may be wrong. English majors prefer a dactyl (on-off-off pronounciation), I guess.

And for you guys watching "Leave It To Beaver" - you need a 2nd job

close examination of The Sporting News from the 1880s reveals that "Cap Anson" was pronounced "f*****' a******."
