Default 1957 Topps Mantle "mystery" image ?

My Mantle card has the faint "ghost" (in the right side of the card). I have seen quite a few 1957 Topps Mantle cards that don't have this image on them.

I'm curious, how many of your Mantle cards have this image ?

Default 57 Mantle

Ted---the Mantle in my 57 set has the image similar to yours. My understanding has been that through ongoing airbrush attempts during the print runs the figure can be either more or less prominent. Although I have heard that cards exist with no image, I have never seen one in person and up close where the figure was not at least partially visible. I have seen some scans where the figure is hard to see, but in person I have not seen a "clean" card.

If you are so inclined, let me know next time you spot one on line. If I could find a clean on I would buy it.

I have also seen speculation as to who the figure is, but have never known there to be a definitive answer

Al
