Default 1949 Bowman Baseball set Information

Posted By: Jim

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find the following magazines for a story I am doing on the 1949 Bowman baseball set. I am trying to find as much information about the set as I can.

1)Baseball Card Magazine, Vol. 3, No.1, Spring 1983,
pages 52-57; "The Case of the Mysterious 1949
Bowman's", by Ralph Triplette and Ted Zanidakis.

2)The Vintage and Classic Baseball Collector Magazine,
Issue #15, May/June 1998, pages 42-43; "1949 Bowman
Color Variations", by Ted Zanidakis
and Ralph Triplette.

I can't seem to locate them but if anyone has scanned pages they can e-mail me that would be great!

Thanks

Ted can get you a copy. It is one of the best articles on baseball cards ever written, and one of the very first I ever read. Ted and I became lifelong friends as a result of it.

Edited to add I was specifically referring to the 1983 article, since you cited two.

....for the complimentary comments regarding my 1983 article.

Indeed, as Barry said, that was "the start of our beautiful friendship".

Barry had read my BASEBALL CARDS Magazine article (Bob Lemke, publisher); which, I co-authored
with another great friend from North Carolina, Ralph Triplette.

Barry had completed his 1949 Bowman set in 1983 and decided to sell it, so he advertised it in SCD.
I was completing a 2nd set at the time and I needed the Richie Ashburn card, so I called him.....
and, the rest is BB hobby history.

And, Barry's wife and my wife are both Irish, and the greatest of friends.

There are many, many stories like this in this hobby, that really make this hobby most meaningful.

Thanks Ted, but one minor inaccuracy in the story, I think.

I was still collecting 49 Bowman at the time but also built up an inventory since I was always upgrading. I think that was just a duplicate.

You are right....your remember better than I do.

I thought it was be nice to relate our story to other Net54 members, as not enough is said about the human
aspect of this hobby.

Guys,

When an old timer like Joe Pelaez complains about the investment part of the hobby, I think this is what he complains about the most. The loss of the interactions and friendships that use to develope over old cardboard.

of this hobby, at least as long as I've been it, whether it is prospecting young players or working on buying the best conditioned cards you can find.

What is now missing again, and while in many ways we have gone back to a 1970's like atmosphere is the constant camaderie that used to be part of the hobby.

Remember hospitality rooms for dealer? When was the last time you set up at a show which had these?

Remember shows, in some parts of the country -- like DFW -- a show of more than 30 tables may be a once a year event

Remember when you had to communicate with letters and phone calls -- now it's all emails.

Now, I'm not saying that everything is bad with today's world --

Just remember, that less chances for personal contact does take something away from the hobby

One item I meant to add is the Net 54 annual dinner is one of the closest things to the old "hospitality" rooms out there. If you have not gone in the past, and are in Cleveland, it's worth attending. I will verify that the ones I have attended have been worth it both on a personal and on a business level

Regards
Rich

I say....DITTO....to everything you said. It is quite an impersonal world in this hobby, nowadays.
