That is a toughie to identify, looks something like Monte Stratton who pitched for them but the facial features don't match 100 % but it could be because of the aging factor.Too bad there is not a number on his jersey visible to make idetifying him a bit easier.Good luck:)

Hi Tim: There is a Burke in the 35G set and a Burke (but not George) that played for Washington that I found at baseballreference.com.

The faces on your card and the 35G look the same to me.

But what I meant to say was that George Burke was the photographer-- the subject is a mystery, however.

Best,
Tim

The rounded C on the hat and the particular SOX logo on the white home uniform pinpoint the years of the photo to 1936-37. I studied team photos from those years but found no match, which leads me to believe he was a faarly marginal player. (It is certainly not Dykes or Stratton. Red Barnes was out of the Majors by 1930, so that eliminates him). In going through the individual pictures of White Sox from 1936 and 1937, the closest look-alike I found was Red Evans, a marginal pitcher who pitched in 17 games for the 36 Sox, but did not appear in the team picture. The resemblance is enough that he could be your man, but I wouldn't stake my White Sox collection on it. Good luck.

David,
I concur, it's not Dykes or Stratton. I've been looking through old photos, and my "White Sox Encyclopedia" and have not come across this particular player. I have emailed a couple fellow Sox fans this pic, so maybe they will know the answer.

Tim, Dave,

I'm looking throug the White Sox Encyclopedia (World Series edition, of course), and p. 326 has a picture of Whitlow Wyatt. Pitched on the sox from 33-36, so falls at the tail end of Dave's estimation. It looks pretty close, but I cant scan a pic, the book is pretty huge.

There is a wikipedia entry for him, but no picture. I'll continue to dig.
So maybe it's him?
Josh

You White Sox guys are impressive bloodhounds! I hadn't thought of Wyatt-- my sense is it isn't him but I will check my cards and ponder it.

Thanks again for all your suggestions--

Tim

It's not Stratton, I have a BB card of him and a picture.

Wyatt is doubtful, too. However, I have seen this face before on a BB card, but cannot
recall where.

I actually went through all my Spalding Guides from 1931 to 1939, and looked at every photo of every White Sox player from that decade...and no matches!

I don't think it's Wyatt either. Burke took photos of guys who barely played in the majors at all--maybe this gentleman never even got into one of the guides. He's got a very distinctive face-- I think one of you would have spotted him.

How about Red Evans, seen below? Pic is small and murky but I see a resemblance--

Tim

Tim, the photo you asked help with...don't know if it's the same (original gone from this message) but came across this during my research...a photo from the scd with Sawyer Biscuit (maybe Bob Lemke would remember) if my memory serves me it is the same...not sure.
