Default New here, looking for Hank Greenberg

I'm also part of Freedom Cardboard, but I decided to venture over here to see what is going on in the pure vintage dept. I'm looking for Hank Greenberg, and solely Hank Greenberg. Here is the link to my bucket.

Welcome to net54! Here's the Greenberg from my Diamond Stars set. I have an extra 1980's Perez-Steele postcard of Greenberg if you still need that card. You can email me at brad_green@cox.net.

Default welcome and..... R309-2

The Freedomcardboard chatboard is a nice place. Lots of young and energetic collectors over there. I met the owner at the National and he seems like a very nice guy. Here is a new pickup for me. I never got around to getting my "R's" filled in, in my set so am doing so now....Not high grade but simply perfect for my collection....regards

Hey Zan! I wandered over here a few months ago and love it. I still visit Freedomcardboard just as frequently but this is the place for vintage. You're going to love it.

Leon,
I do get the point. I can only tell you and I think Matt can verify that I sent him a list of cards last week and on it was a 1934 Annis Furs Gehringer PC. Now I may have listed it as such bc subconciously I recalled seeing the poster at some point. I'm so old I'm not sure.

I vouch - especially since he got the Gehringer form me

I picked up a Goslin this week from another board member who had it listed as Annis Furs - In the past year, I'm finding that most people who know about that issue know the right name. That certainly was not the case 5 years ago.

Default Hey Jeff

Hey Jeff
All in good fun. I don't recall seeing anything about where those actually came from, and they had always been described as most still do as "Detroit team cards", before the poster. Information is so much faster than when we were kids. Can you imagine if Burdick had the internet?

I know. For years I assumed these were a product of the Detroit News like the oversized colorful supplements. I am not sure when or how for that matter I realized their connection with Annis Furs. It may very well have come from seeing your poster at some point. And..........it is all good fun!

Have any of those BF2s left?

I did a search on the board, under "annis" and it looks like it was about 3 1/2 yrs ago that the poster was shown. It was shown by some guy named "Archive". That Archive guy must be the smartest baseball card collector in the history of the Universe, not just Earth, but the whole Universe. He seems to know everything!!!

As for the BF2's.....the rest will be in our next B and L Auction.....not sure how they will be split up yet but I am leaning to having groups of them. regards

Leon, you outbid me on that card! I can really only afford low grade vintage since I'm still a student with a low budget regardless that card is awfully beautiful.

leftygrove10, I only collect Greenberg cards at the moment. I would need the Diamond Stars but I don't expect you to break up the set to sell it to me.

Thanks for the warm welcome fellas.

Since this has turned into a show-em thread and I also used to be student with a low budget (luckily, I was fortunate enough to graduate, and today I'm just low budget).

That's part of it. I used to be a first basemen when I played baseball back when I was younger. Before I started solely collecting him I wanted a bat card of his just because it was affordable and looked nice. I decided then I wanted to collect him.

Hey Brian,
Sorry about that. I knew there were a few bidders on it even though it was sort of miscategorized. I had been looking for an R309-2 (which are rather tough) when that small group came up....so there I was. I was a little surprised this Greenberg card went as high as it did, in the condition it is, but then also know he is a top tier HOF'er and Jewish to boot. My birth name was Kaplan......long story.

Zan,

Try searching for team issued photos, they're oversized and nice, and can usually be found fairly inexpensive...

Ok, I know this has been a card thread up until the above team issued picture, but I always like to show this piece when the opportunity arises. Flog me if you must Leon for posting memorabilia in a card thread .
A handwrtten letter dated 10 July 1944 , written and signed by Hank Greenberg during WWII, while he was stationed in China.
I also have the envelope which he signed twice.
And yes I am also a Yid, and I grew up in the Bronx as Hank did, and I went to the same high school in the Bronx that Hank did, James Monroe HS.

Richard- that is an awsome letter!!! It is very apropos for this thread too. I must be seen as a hard-ass out there (by members)......and that's certainly not my intention. Yes, it's nice to keep most things organized on the board but this is a hobby and is supposed to be fun. That is what I am trying to get back to. Thanks for posting the letter. regards

Default Greenberg

Hey, Brian/Zan,
Welcome. Unfortunately, I have a new scanner but have been too lazy to scan all the cards in. Maybe someday.
Leon, yes, I was also a bit surprised that card went so high, but they don't come around too often.

Greenberg is, for me, one of those rare heroes.

Greenberg had encouraging words for Jackie Robinson in 1947, saying them to him right on the ballfield. That was not exactly a popular stance to take for an opposing player in 1947.
Rachel Robinson holds him in high regard for encouraging Jackie.

Thanks to the guys who complimented my Greenberg letter.
I have sold a few things out of my baeball collection lately to finance purchases to build up my presidential collection but this piece will never be sold.

Default Hank Greenberg Help

Need help from Hank Greenberg fans. This looks like a 7 1/2" x 10" blank back premium (I think). I picked it up years ago and have no idea where I got it. Anyone know what it is Thanks D.

My first thought was that the above picture is a 1934 Butterfinger. The Butterfingers measure about 7 3/4 by 9 3/4, have a blank back and have a facsimile autograph like yours. However, it's not a Butterfinger as Greenberg was not in that set. It might be a team-issued photo of some type. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge on premiums will be able to help you.

The interesting thing about that letter is that it appears to be addressed to someone with the last name of Bataglia in Barrington, Illinois. I grew up not far from Barrington and knew a number of people with that last name growing up. It would really be interesting to track them down again and see if the recipient was a family member of theirs. Great letter!!

On a side note that is totally unrelated to this thread except that it pertains to Barrington, Barrington Illinois is where Baby Face Nelson bought it in a gun battle with 2 federal officers. Odly enough, there is a McDonalds there today!!

Brian - Welcome to the Board!

I'm a bit of a Greenberg fan myself. He was underrated playing in Detroit (if he had been a Yankee, he would have been as revered as DiMaggio!). Here's a selection of his cards from my website (link to the site is in my signature line below). Good luck building your collection!
