Default what are 1939 Goudey Premiums ?

Posted By: steve

No regular Goudey cards in 1939 - so what are the "Premiums" I see? I don't know of their origin or distribution. They are much larger size - what paper/cardboard stock? Any detail help. By the way, they look cool. Thx, Steve.

There's a small thread about these a little lower on the page that was started just a couple of days ago. Their designation is R-303, and there are three different variations: R-303A (black and white, and slightly smaller than the others), and R303-B (1 and 2), which are slightly larger, with one being sepia tone and the other being b/w.

Very lightweight stock, tough to find in higher grades, many have pinholes and/or tape/glue marks.

Speculation is that they were produced to help sell a brand of Diamond Stars Gum in the time frame around 1938-1940.

I think they're absolutely stunning cards.

There is also a Canadian version, known as V351 if I remember correctly.
