1. Just a couple of days ago I told my wife that if anything ever happened to me to sell my collection through REA. Her response "I would never sell the collection". She really meant it. Of course she followed with "Unless I really need the money".

2. She sees you packing a card that you've just sold and gets mad and asks you to stop selling!

3. You summer vacation is a visit to 2 MLB games (conveniently located neat the National), visit to the National Show and one of the few wives to attend the N54 dinner.

She lets me do anything I want to with cards.....buy, sell, collect...go to shows.....it's all ok with her....We are very happy. On the converse I let her do whatever she wants...which is mainly just take care of our little girl and take care of household matters. It works very well...

she exists only in your imagination.

Since 50%+ of marriages end in divorce, here is the reality check.

Stay single- it is the best strategy for building a world class collection

1. Shut Mr. Mint and his "sexual advances" down in front of a crowd of people. Then followed it up by making fun of his picture with the "money fan"

2. Asked James Spence what makes him so special to authenticate autographs

3. Pointed out two raw cards in a case (1959 fleers) for 10 bucks each which graded an 8 and 9.

All that at her first card show!

She lets you sit home and fiddle on the computer selling your crap while she works a real job 50 hours a week saving peoples lives. Of course that comes with certain "conditions"............but I'm not complaining.

Bruce,

Do you ever dress your Boston Store uncut sheet in a teddy? A bottle of Chianti, perhaps.

LOL!!!

Bruce: I tripped a few times, yet I still walk.
I've been in a car accident, yet I still drive.
etc.
P.S. I've been married for 28 years. Just because other failed didn't stop me from trying
(same philosophy I had in business).

Ted: I wish I could have been there for #1 on your list!!
If your wife is available, can I borrow her for the next show?

Bruce,

You're kidding, right? Sure there are times when I'd like to stuff a sock in my wife's mouth but overall, I'm happy. My wife doesn't give me too much crap about adding cards to my collection. I guess your statistic fits that "glass half full", "glass half empty" test. Just out of curiosity Bruce, have you been taken to the cleaners before? If so, did you ever remarry? Oh yeah, lets keep this thread related to vintage baseball cards: Go Chargers! (in London)

I'd feel really sorry for you. What a hollow, pathetic life that would be. Nothing in the world compares with being with my family. I'd trade anything I own for more happy times with them at the end of my days here on earth. Without their support I could not assemble and enjoy my collection. If you don't have that in your life I pity you. Anything you can't share with people you love ultimately is masturbation no matter how you gloss it.

To each his own

We love our family but have no interest whatsoever in ever getting married,
sharing a residence with or certainly our collection or other valuables with
another person.

We don't need other people to provide us with entertainment, love or happiness

if you want to mix bank accounts and body fluids Boxing Man, that is
your business.

We would rather concentrate 100% of our efforts on winning new business,
working 18 hour days 7 days a week 52 weeks a year and building our
world class baseball memorabilia collection.

I do not believe anyone here ever accused you of having a wish to settle into a Waltonesque family bliss. At the moment I think your status quo in that regard is not vulnerable. Your collecting video cemented that for me.

Bruce,

I hope you just enjoy the attention and are having a good laugh at our expense. As someone stated earlier, it's hilarious if written in good fun, but the exact opposite if you're being serious. Those sentiments smack of Howard Hughes. Another couple of bumps up that ladder and you'll be wearing Kleenex boxes on your feet and saving your urine in gallon jars.

I didn't know what I started, but I can't believe how funny this thread has become.

In responses to "Does your wife really know how much you spend each year?"

I'm going to guess that 90% of the wives have no idea how much their husband spends.

Either because they trust their husband not to spend more than they can afford (my case)
or
because their husband purposely hides their spending from her and their wife has no idea how expensive this hobby is.

Bruce, I'm going to guess that quite a few on N54 could have world class collections. Others probably spend their extra $$
on other "investments" (i.e. rental property, vacation homes, etc.). But I agree with what you said "to each his own". If
your collection gives you all you need, good for you. You're probably happier than most of the men in this world.

Dan

My wife doesn't know how much I spend because I only spend money I make by buying and selling cards and memorabilia. She is great though as far as my collecting goes she doesn't care how I decorate with my stuff throughout the house. I finished my basement about a year ago though and moved it all downstairs...I used to have it all through the house.

And a note for Bruce...statistically speaking married men live longer than single men and are happier.

What a great thread! My clients in the waiting room can't figure out why I am in my office falling on the floor laughing. Just think of all the creativity which would have gone down the drain if we didn't have to invent those cover-ups, half truths and convuluted stories to cover our card purchases from our wives.

My wife's only reaction to my cards is to laugh and chortle with glee when she sees how goofy some of the players look on the cards (and many DO look goofy, especially in the regional sets like T210s etc.) She knows I try to hold the line on spending and since she is going to outlive me, I have tried to give her a primer on value and some names of fellow collectors who can help her out if she decides to sell the tbob collection, but she is probably going to just split the collection among the 2 kids, one of whom (the 27 year single daughter) vows never to sell it and wants first pick because she is no dummy and wants the Matty signed baseball.

She loves going to Nationals now because she enjoys going to games, shopping, visiting art museums but won't set foot in the Convention Center on a bet. It works well for both of us If I had to slab her she would be a 10 OC.

BTW, on that "exchanging bodily fluids" comment, I guess it depends on whose bodily fluid you are making a withdrawal from. Keira Knightley's fluid is far more valuable than a well cut piece of cardboard any day of the week
(The wife doesn't read this board!)

Bob: "It works well for both of us If I had to slab her she would be a 10 OC."

Is the OC side to side or top to bottom? It does make a difference...
Don't forget SGC would only give her an 8!!

I'm sure my wife doesn't know how much I spend on cards.
Honestly - if I did a running total myself - I would probably be alarmed myself... so in that respect neither do I.

As far as Dan P's points.....

1.
I think I am going to have to express my desire to be buried with certain cards - because I fear that my most prized pieces will be sold for a mere pittance. Now that I think of it.... instead of a coffin..... I wonder if SGC would be willing to slab me with my collection in my pockets. And with that, now I am wondering what grade I would get.

2.
My wife asks when she is going to receive the money.

3.
My trip to the National cost me another trip to Aruba.

No.... my wife doesn't completely get the baseball collecting passion - but she is incredibly supportive. Much more supportive than I would be. Amazing to be so supportive with something you don't personally get. I am a lucky collector in that regard - - and for many many other reasons, I am a lucky man.

Now, as far as the bodily fluids, ATM machine, and little cameras.
My curiosity has heightened - and its something I want to try.

If you see me on a youtube video by an ATM - try not to think less of me.

edit: missing word giving completely wrong meaning

For our 12th anniversary she presented me with plane tickets to Boston on May 17, 1999 returning on May 19. Those dates coincided with two Red Sox home dates against you know who. She had asked me some time before who Boston's biggest rival was but at the time I had no idea why. The first game's pitching matchup was a classic: Pedro and Cone. The second game wasn't quite as attractive: Brian Rose and Toad Irabu. The Sox won 'em both.

Looking back at it now, it's kind of amazing that I was able to call up the Red Sox box office and get an excellent ticket to both games, one down each line. The top price seat at Fenway in '99 was $35. Mine were $32. A lot has changed in less than 10 years.

Five years later she booked a night at the most expensive hotel in town for our 17th and when we entered the room and looked around I saw a framed 16" x 20" of Bobby Orr scoring "The Goal". "What a coincidence", I said out loud, "my favourite player." Upon closer inspection I saw that it was autographed. She then handed me the envelope with the COA in it.

She's the best.

Can I ask: Was the Bobby Orr painting facing the bed that night?

Well, the picture was facing the bed but Bobby was (and is) flying through the air facing the ice so I don't know how much he could see. Just some peripheral stuff, I guess.

Sorry to disappoint you about the threesome but it was our anniversary, for cryin' out loud.<g>

"We would rather concentrate 100% of our efforts on winning new business, working 18 hour days 7 days a week 52 weeks a year and building our world class baseball memorabilia collection."

No matter how much crap you accumulate if you don't accumulate relationships you will live out your life alone and isolated with no one to give a damn about you or your precious when you die. If that's the price of a "world class" collection, count me out. Of course many of your beloved "whales" have both world class collections and lives, so this entire discussion is just a big put-on.

I wonder if the Brice saying they don't want a wife (wives?) is akin to a Net54 board member saying, "No way am I playing for the Yankees. No way!"

Well, that's good, pal, cause I don't think the Yankees have been beating down your door.

(Now I will sit back and wait to hear how many super-duper models have been on the Brice's arms when they've had dinner with the Dalai Lama, Ali and Warren Buffet.)

Recently, I opined that:

"Some people look for a negative side in anything Bruce writes. I think he knows it, and likes to start a little trouble from time to time.

I didn't think this was one of those times."

Clearly, this is a different thread.

This is one of the most entertaining threads in a long time. I know I have a great wife because she indulges my card habit and can visually identify probably two dozen different prewar sets. She can differentiate between a Zeenut and a T205, enjoys going to baseball games, and has a pretty good arm, often pitching to our sons in the front yard. Her favorite prewar player is Johnny Bates of the Phillies and Reds.

Barry,

I'll be the first to admit that I can't believe what I'm about to say... Bruce, at first, annoyed the heck out of me. He said he had something which I don't think he actually possesed. He said he was going to send me a copy of an article from a 1920s publication that probably didn't exist. He never sent it. That really bugged me. You always hear/read how much he wants to purchase nice grade material. Well, he made an offer on something I had and he paid a fair price for it. That didn't necessarily make me like him but it did tell me he was actually serious about accumulating nice material.

Bruce starts some interesting threads and he seems to have this "Alan Rosen" type of persona where you if you really dislike him, you "really dislike him" In any case, Bruce does seem to start some interesting threads and he does get a lot of responses from those threads. If you look back at most threads that he starts he actually gets several people to post. In some cases the responses are related to the thread and in others it's that Alan Rosen thing...

When it comes to Bruce, I'm a little neutral these days. By the way Bruce, have you been married more than once? Or should I ask, have you been divorced more than once?

Edited to add: Adam, you come up with some pretty funny stuff... Sometimes these threads start to bust me up...

I wonder if the Bruces saying they don't want a wife (wives?) is akin to a Net54 board member saying, "No way am I playing for the Yankees. No way!"

Well, that's good, pal, cause I don't think the Yankees have been beating down your door.>>

LMAO

she is beautiful, smart, rich, loves sex and supports your collection.

This is not a description of MY wife, however.

Mark, good one!

I like Bruce's threads. They're usually funny or informative/thought provoking. And the guy has that Boston Garter panel -- I'm not sure that item can be topped, period.

It seems to me that too many threads, for better or worse, center around Bruce. Does anyone else see this as not so good for the board?

Probably not good. Is there a way to redistribute the extra attention Bruce gets to some folks who don't receive as much?

Jeff, I can think of a lot of things that top pictures of men in their underwear.

Barry, I haven't noticed

Any thread that Bruce begins or replies to, is almost immediately derailed. I don't mind it when it's a thread about cards valued high in the stratosphere, or some other pompous topic. But, it's unfortunate when a refreshingly comical one like Dan's "wife" thread here loses focus.

Incidentally, Bruce's ability to shed these assaults is remarkable, I've never seen any thing like it. It's almost as if he's a cyborg.
