Default The 1959 Ted Williams Fleer set is an Iconic underrated set Please help me price mine

Good afternoon Vintage baseball card hobbyists,

I spent a couple years accumulating my 1959 fleer Ted Williams set. Although, now that I have decided to sell it, I am a little confused on the best price to sell it at. I thought that $2000 for my set, which has 32 graded cards with #68 being a PSA 6 and the remaining raw cards being in Very Good - Near Mint condition was a very justifiable price, although I have not received any good offers on eBay or Instagram. I also posted it on this forum, although I did not receive even one reply. What am I doing wrong. Can anyone help me sell this for what it’s worth?
Thank you very much,
Joe

Well...the money card in a PSA 6 is around a $700 card. So then, you have to ask yourself, what are the values of the other cards.....The other cards, say they grade a PSA 6 are worth between $10-$30 each. Therefore, your $2,000 is a little on the high side. This set also lacks other money cards, other than the one. That hurts it. And unless the others are graded 9 or higher, the values just aren't there.

Maybe contact a sports auction house and consign it to them. May be your best opportunity of getting a good return on you set.

Congrats on the set, very nice!

Anything less than a PSA 6 or in another holder (SGC, BCCG) basically has no value. You might can group them all together and squeeze a little out, but that is the reality of it.

Interesting, I appreciate your responses. Well... with that being said, if anyone would like to make me an offer please reply or direct message me. Honestly though, Fleer should be commended for making this set. I may be wrong, but there is no other set like it, that captures 80 real life moments of any player, let alone, “The Greatest Hitter of All Time” as Williams wanted to be know as. Imagine if he didn’t lose three years in his prime to serving his country. But, I believe, if you asked Ted, he would say that he wouldn’t want that time back and was instead, proud to serve!

I think if you asked for $1,000 you would find a buyer.

Out of curiosity looking at what is for sale on ebay, and what has sold, I think you are really close at $2K. Maybe a couple hundred over. I wouldn't budge under $1800 for sure, and would be patient at $2K to be honest, especially with the obvious work you've done putting this together and your passion for the set. Several have sold right around there in similar condition.

That said, I think the problem is the fact sort of mentioned here that most don't see the same passion with this set. Personally, as a set collector, I just don't find the appeal. Outside of the SP card, none really have anything that sets them apart...kind of like the Beatles cards or issues of that nature. I can appreciate that these are cards of one of the greatest and actually during his playing days...all the pictures out of uniform and the fact they are ALL Ted cards really turns me off a bit, and I think I am not alone.

But again, there is a buyer for everything and if your patient that buyer will be there like the other sets that have sold. Marking it down to $1000 just to blow it out would not be wise. To me this would be a set you build, and keep...or understand it's just going to take a while to sell based on the limited base of collectors. Good luck with it!

Thank you for your well worded thoughts. I am certainly in no rush to sell, and when the right buyer comes along that will enjoy the set as I have, I will be happy to pass it on. Take care.

A similar set, just a little worse overall it appears, and with a PSA 6 #68 that is the vast majority of the value, sold in April for $882: https://www.ebay.com/itm/33396814845...kAAOSw3mBgfwFH.

I don't think the $1,000 is that out of line, looking at the eBay sold item sales for complete sets. I'd price a bit higher, but the #68 is the vast majority of the value of a set.

I personally really like this set and have 79 of them, but it's very common and not very popular (even #68 is actually not that hard at all. The market does not suggest $2,000 is likely to happen.

VCP for a complete set in PSA 6 is $2,323.80 (i.e., every card graded a PSA 6). Obviously a buyer would pay a premium for the cards all being entombed (fairly or not).

That is the thing. Not every card is PSA. He has BCCG, SGC, GAI the whole gamut. To get the most value, I would sell the rare card by itself, and then sell all the others in a lot. Maybe even ship them off to someone like Sterling of Love of the Game and tell them to break it up like that.

Not my favorite set but needed it for a Fleer run. One of the Ted signs is real and one is a fake

48 cards aren't graded. So you have to pay to send those off, wait a year and see what they grade. Then send those not in PSA holders to get them regraded. Then adjust the price for those less than PSA 6, Op says some are VG. Given the choice of a PSA 6 set for 2300 and what the OP has for 1800-2000, you can see why there is no interest. Lower the cost to 1000 and you can find someone willing to do the work and invest additional funds to make it a 2300 set. Why is it not fair to pay a premium for graded cards? It is an additional cost to the seller. He should be able to recoup that cost.

You want to know if he has 79 of the 80 cards in the set, or 79 sets of the 80 cards ?

I was also thinking $800-$1000 at the most. It has been a little over a year but I sold a complete graded NrMint average set and didn't get much more than $2000.

Looking at the results, the way to sell is to sell 68 separate and then a 1-79 set. That seems to net much more. $800 is still $10 a card average, which is more than most of them are worth, which seems about right. The supply is so large and interest so small, I don't see this set ever achieving much value. I put my 79 card set together, F-EX raw, for $217 according to my records. This set is nicer, but I can't find a similar set selling for close to $2K. I'm a fan of the Fleer 59-63 issues, cheap and fun sets to put together and flip through

There are a lot of interesting and off beat Fleer baseball related sets between 1964 and 1980 as well.
