Default 1981 Topps Scratch Offs variation help

I am trying to put together a master 1981 Topps Scratch Off set and, after being contacted by a dealer and sending him my "need" list, need some help.

It seems he considers the variations on the back a myth. I told him I was using a checklist from Net54 and the Trading Card data base. However, he says he has and has seen a lot of these scratch offs and never seen the variations.

What I am referring to are back such as these -
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 38 (Trammell) Trammell ball strike indicator
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 38 (Trammell) Trammell locker offer
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 37 (Burleson) Burleson ball strike indicator
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 37 (Burleson) Burleson hat offer or

3 (Jackson)/ 22 (Revering)/ 40 (Meyer) Meyer ball strike indicator
3 (Jackson)/ 22 (Revering)/ 40 (Meyer) Meyer hat offer
3 (Jackson)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 39 (Henderson) Henderson hat offer
3 (Jackson)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 39 (Henderson) Henderson locker offer

For example I have the Cooper...Trammell ball strike indicator and needed the Trammell locker off and have the Cooper...Burleson ball strike indicator and need the Cooper...Burleson hat offer -- have the Jackson...Meyer hat offer and need the Jackson...Meyer ball strike indicator have the Jackson...Henderson locker offer need the Jackson...Henderson hat offer.

There are approximately 36 of these variations.

Does anyone have any of the variations with both backs? If so could you send me a scan. I would appreciate it. I told him I would continue my "hunt" and, if I ever get any of the variations, would send him a scan.

Thanks
Jim

I do not believe there are back variations for complete panels.

Individual cards can be found with different backs, but that is because each player is on multiple panels.

Since players appear on multiple panels, you can find the individual Alan Trammell card with different backs because on the Cooper/Wilson/Trammell panel the Trammell back is the ball-strike indicator, but on the Jackson/Bell/Trammell panel, the Trammell back is the locker offer.

A master set is 144 panels. I put together the master set through multiple lots, and never came across any back variations.

Looking at the pictures of uncut sheets, there are 72 National League panels and 72 American League panels, which equals the 144 master set. Therefore, no panel combination would have been double printed, so it does not seem possible that there would be 2 panels with the same combination of players on the front that would have different backs.

Thanks much. I do appreciate this. When the smoke clears I will see what I have. Maybe I will then have the master set of 144 also. Interesting in that one of the check lists it said 144 panels but I don't know how to account for the other check list posted by the Net54 person, which I have using, which showed the variations I have shown. I will consider the 144 a master set and put this one to bed. The folks at Net54 have always come through for me.

Thanks again,

Jim

Check with Al Richter, he knows a lot about this set IIRC.

We had a prior thread looking for what turned out to be a non existent variation that PSA listed in it's checklist.

I have a set of the panels ( 144) and a set of panels Proofs (144) in which the actions are not covered by the black balls

Al,
I do appreciate this. I was using a checklist put on NET54 a number of years ago, the first I found, that listed them like this:

2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 38 (Trammell) Trammell ball strike indicator
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 38 (Trammell) Trammell locker offer
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 37 (Burleson) Burleson ball strike indicator
2 (Cooper)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 37 (Burleson) Burleson hat offer
2 (Cooper)/ 21 (Bell)/ 39 (Henderson)
2 (Cooper)/ 19 (Manning)/ 38 (Trammell)
3 (Jackson)/ 21 (Bell)/ 39 (Henderson)
3 (Jackson)/ 21 (Bell)/ 38 (Trammell)
3 (Jackson)/ 22 (Revering)/ 40 (Meyer) Meyer ball strike indicator
3 (Jackson)/ 22 (Revering)/ 40 (Meyer) Meyer hat offer
3 (Jackson)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 39 (Henderson) Henderson hat offer
3 (Jackson)/ 20 (Wilson)/ 39 (Henderson) Henderson locker offer etc.

so I was looking for all the variations this way. However, I was getting confused as I realized that I would have way more than 144 so couldn't understand. A couple other Net54 people have got me straightened out but I still didn't have a good checklist. Looking at your suggested threads I found the one that will put me straight.

I do appreciate you reaching out and helping me put this one to bed. I also never knew there was a proof version.

Again, thanks a lot.

Jim
