Raw v Graded

Seeing a lot of raw cards selling for very strong prices / with eBay guarantee is it really worth it to pay companies like PSA who want $150,$300-$600 to grade a card when bidders are happy with the AG backing the auction. Have a bunch of raw was going to get graded to sell but why pay the thousands it will cost.

Well, I'm a relatively new returnee to the hobby. Before getting back into it, I happened to read The Card (by Michael O'Keefe and Teri Thompson) and Operation Bullpen (by Kevin Nelson).

After reading those books (especially The Card), I don't feel silly or super unsophisticated when I trust my own eye (as opposed to the trusting the integrity of the third party graders) and pay a decent price for a raw card from a dealer with a brick and mortar shop in the community.

I don't think ebay's authenticity guarantee and seller feedback scores gives the same comfort as buying from a guy who hangs a shingle and has to look you in the eye when you run into him at the barber shop next week -- but it is getting better. I've bought a number of modern and 1970s raw cards and was very happy.

I think it all depends on what you have and how you expect it will grade out. Obviously the key here is that you’re planning to sell, and evaluating whether it makes sense to grade prior to sale or just sell raw. I mention it because it’s a different calculus than if you’re just planning to hold onto them for your personal collection.

If you have major stars and HOFers, particularly from early years and/or tough issues, and they will grade strongly, then often the cost to get them graded will result in a higher sales price that more than makes up for the grading cost.

If you’re dealing with commons, even in good grades, then it probably doesn’t make sense unless they’re going to grade really strong. Like 8, 9, or 10, depending on the precise year and issue.

If you post pictures of some of what you have, then often the group is happy to offer opinions about what is worth getting graded prior to a sale.
