Default Al Simmons 1926 Spalding - Rookie?

Posted By: Richard

Why was this card bid up so high? Looking at the bidders involved in the auction, I can't believe that they did not know that this is not Al Simmons' rookie card.

Is the 1926 Spalding Simmons a rare card, or were people duped into thinking that it was really his rookie (and not his 1923 Exhibit)?

I also read the thread about ad backs. Brian mentions that the ad and bio backs are about equal. Perhaps this Simmons took off because of the ad back?

It clearly is not his rookie card if you count Exhibit Cards... but some people do not.

I wanted it because it was the earliest Simmons card that I would have owned...

but now I will just try to find the 1923-24 Exhibit of him.

The description says rookie, so many will bite. Others will justify their "exhibits don't count, and die-cuts aren't cards" philosophy so as to make this Al's rookie.

Personally, I think PT Barnum is somewhere smiling at this one, and I would not be surprised if 3-4 more of these Simmons hit Ebay by year end. If so, expect the price to go down a little and the card quality to go up--while I don't own one, these cards are often found in fairly high grade.
