Default Has anyone ever noticed this?

Just got this Ritchey card in a lot that I won on ebay. When I first saw it, I just thought the print looked dark. Then I compared it to the one already in my set and thought "What the ....!". Please take a look and let me know what you think. I know cards can vary in appearance due to the amount of ink being used but this card looks to have a completely different backround.

Is the one on the right from the 150 series, while the other card is from the 350 series?

Default Dove version

If my memory is correct there was more than one printing of this card. The version on the right is referred to a the "dove" version for the shape in the clouds.

Some consider the Ritchey card to be two variations one with the "Dove" and one without however the "Dove" is part of the original design and it is simply a matter of the dark green ink application and how well it shows.

If you look at these images you will see how the relation to the amount of dark green ink on the bottom of the cards coincides with the image of the "Dove" and the clouds in the sky. The more dark green and the higher it rises on the card, the darker the clouds and the more pronounced the "Dove."

The application of ink improved from the 150 series to the 350 series and therefore more "Doves" are seen on 350 series cards than 150 series. But it's there in all of them, just not seen in some.

Fascinating, thanks for bringing this to attention. I never realized that such printing variations could occur. Tim - how did you ever come by such knowledge? The scans and details are superb.

Thank you. I have been working on a Boston National T206 super set for quite some time and have seen a lot of Ritchey's. The Dove image has fascinated me since I first read about it on the old Net54 board. I think I have completed the Ritchey front/back run at 11 cards unless someone can produce a Sovereign 350.

There was a thread on this a couple of years ago. Perhaps somebody who is better at searching than I am can find it.
