Ruth ball auto washed off by cleaning lady!..any suggestions?
At the bottom in red is an email I received on March 31st...if anyone can help him please email him direct, thanks -Carlton
__________________________________________________ ___ Hello Bruce, Thanks for writing SportsAntiques.com...I'm very sorry this has happened to such an important heirloom...It sounds dire, but I'm not a autograph guy...However...There is a sports memorabilia forum www.Net54Baseball.com . There are many autograph specialist that post there regularly. If there is any way to recover the inscription, I speculate members on Net54 would know. If you like I could copy and paste your request for help on there along with your email address to respond to...or you could join Net54 and post it yourself...it only takes a few minutes to sign up. Thanks again for writing. Kindly -Carlton __________________________________________________ ______ March 31, 2011 name: Bruce Morlan blmorlan@me.com comments: Hi, I need some help. I don't know if there is enough space here to describe my issue. Basically, I have a baseball signed by Babe Ruth. It is the only thing I have from my Dad who died when I was ten. To make a long story short a cleaning lady took it out of it's display case and scrubbed it, erasing the name! Do you know anyone who might be able to help. Maybe some kind of technology to see if it is still there? Thanks for your help!Bruce ________________________________________

My God! I'd be ripping some heads off.
Not because of the Ruth thing, but because of the sentimental value associated with his father. The Ruth part just makes it that much worse. WOW! Please tell me that this is a late April fool's joke. Last edited by novakjr; 04-05-2011 at 03:31 PM. |

But seriously, is there a way to enhance a washed-out signature that works and is also considered acceptable restoration? I sold a Ted Williams autographed ball on eBay for only $50 this year because the ink had faded terribly since I got it back in 1985. Had it not been so faded, I wouldn't have parted with it. I always wondered if there was some kind of chemical or perhaps heat treatment that might have restored/darkened the old inks (100% of the signature was still visible - it was just very, very light).

This one is way beyond my comprehension. Why would a cleaning lady go out of her way to take a baseball out of its cube (holder) and scrub it down. Geez. Like I wrote, this is way beyond my comprehension.

Well done. That makes sense. I guess anything is possible. Too bizarre.

We could always have SteaknChop throw one of his authentic looking signatures on it.

If the cleaning lady was bonded, there could be a theoretic recovery. Homeowners may even possibly present some avenue for recovery, but I doubt it.

Let's just assume . . .
.
. . . that the ball was taken, and replacement put in it's place. Perhaps our ball guys could identify the appropriate era that the replacement ball was manufactured in. Further assuming the thief is not too sharp, it's possible the replacement ball was manufactured after 1948. Perhaps better photographs of the ball now in hand might lead to snaring a thief. Just a thought. Last edited by HexsHeroes; 04-06-2011 at 05:50 PM. |

She would have had to scrub the hell out of that ball to get a sig off.
Someone stole that ball.

Switching balls makes the most sense. I really can't see anyone dumb enough to take a signed ball out of a display and trying to erase a signature. Just doesn't make any sense at all.

Maybe it came from Roaches and she was so outraged by the fake that she wanted to destroy it
