All welcome: SABR meeting and BBQ in Vancouver next Saturday August 15

Once again, we’ll be having a local meeting of the Society for American Baseball Research (http://www.sabr.org) in Vancouver this summer.

The meeting at Nat Bailey Stadium. The date is next Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 1 to 3. We’ll again have a BBQ at our place (2953 Ontario St, a short 10 minutes from the stadium) and there is a Vancouver Canadians game that night.

We have confirmed that John Haar and Ossie Chavarria will be speaking at this year's meeting. John was a standout UBC athlete, spent time in the minors for SF and NYY, and has contributed immensely to baseball in Canada. A full bio is here http://www.theballpark.ca/Haar.jpg

Ossie has had a long career in Vancouver baseball, as well as time in the major leagues with KC. A Vancouver Mountie, he later contributed to the game through a long career as an umpire. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...havaos01.shtml



Both these gentlemen have great stories to tell, and we hope you'll find time to attend. All are welcome to attend, even if you’re not a SABR member. If possible, RSVP so we can get an idea for the numbers at the Stadium and for the BBQ (and thanks to those who have already RSVP’d). We’ll be supplying hot dogs and salad and some beer.

And of course, there will be a Vancouver Canadians baseball game that night, with a fireworks show after the game. Please attend and support owner and SABR member Jake Kerr’s wonderful efforts in restoring minor league baseball in Vancouver. And please feel free to pass the invitation on to others.

Max: By the grace of Felicia (or, Fellatio in the local dialect), erstwhile Category 4 hurricane and present storm remnant wimp, Jeannette and I are cleared for take-off and will be present at all events on Saturday.
