Then again... I guess this is a RARITY since the printers actually hit his lips with the red ink!

Hal--That is the world's ugliest card. It makes Jackson look like Kid Shelleen's brother in the movie Cat Ballou.

I agree.

Someone obviously wants one pretty bad...

considering that the starting bid was only something like $500.

His lips are where they should be, but has anyone noticed the alien hands? Only three showing on the hip.....try it out yourself - makes one feel downright flouncy and looking to bust out a merengue!

Everyone likes to poke fun at this card's appearance but it never stopped anyone from bidding. It's amazing that he even made it into the set as an Athletic. In two seasons with the team he had 6 hits in 40 at bats for a very robust .150 batting average. He easily could have been left out of it. And yet he is there. And if you offer it, people will bid (didn't Kevin Costner say that in "Field of Dreams"?).

In my opinion Jackson is the nicest image from the e90-1 set. Maybe 2nd to Young's portrait. Maybe? Jackson's image is very similar to other sets of Cobb leaning-on-his-bat pose, which may be the nicest image of any player in any vintage color set. My guess is the bidding has not stopped.

this actor who led "the dirty dozen" played both Kid Shelleen and his evil twin brother in the 1965 classic Cat Ballou.

Quan- I never thought that was a good bidding strategy, even when my own customers do it. You just create the perception that the lot is worth a lot more than it is, and you raise the bar for other bidders. I would get a low bid in early and not come back again until the very end. Try to catch the others by surprise.

Maybe the logic is that if the bid is in before Thanksgiving then it isn't Christmas or Holiday gift money being spent. So, if you happen to win a $10K lot you wont have to feel bad about not having enough to get the old lady a nice tennis bracelet or diamond ring. Remember, that wasn't gift money, that was auction money, honey...

BARRY S

It's not too "amazing" he was included in this set........these cards were printed in Philadelphia.

I hate to differ from some....but, I would say it is close to being the "ugliest" card in the E90-1
set.

And, it really doesn't warrant such a high price as it was issued in the 1st series of this set; and
therefore, not as scarce as many others in the set. But, it's "Shoeless Joe", and he is a "legend",
so the sky is the limit.

Scott B and I were speaking of the E90-1 Jackson(s) this morning. It's amazing the prices they are going for nowadays. It seems like it should be a 5k card in vg....but today it's about 2.5x-3x that. Supply and demand. I too think it's an ugly card. He's usually wearing lipstick which I guess is good for drag queens...(not that there's anything wrong with that)...and that's if the lipstick is actually on his face

I have to agree that it's an ugly card too. I personally think Joe's CJ card is his most attractive. Too bad he doesn't have a real T3!

He's not wearing lipstick in my card. He just has a bit of Cherry Cool-Aid left over on his lip...nothing wrong with a little Cool-Aid on the lip.

i agree with "ugly" duckling! Between the ill applied lipstick and the wide, fat looking nose...I find it to be quite ugly and I wouldn't want one for free! Well maybe for free!

It's a classic baseball pose (on deck / waiting turn a batting practice / standing around doing nothing). Kind of like a boxing card with the boxer sitting on stool in corner. It's a part of the sport you see all the time, but not captured too often. That's why Sweeney, Bos is one of my fav's -- sitting on the bench just watching the game .....

It may not be the most beautiful card, but I wouldn't call it the ugliest. It's got interesting colors, the purple background is nice. The artist made some curious choices, which makes it a conversation piece.

I think its pretty simple to justify its value. Think of all of the different cobb cards from the various T and E sets alone. Think of how many Jackson cards from his playing days were made period.

I thought it was time to have an avatar a little more in the Holiday Spirit. As I understand, Enzyte and Smilin Bob are negotiating with Leon, as we speak, to get some Banner time. At least that's what they were saying in the Chat Room the other night.

LEON

I paid $120 for this card in Ex condition when I was putting together this set......but, that
was way back in the "Paleothic Era".
And, I was reluctant to even pay that amount since I thought that Shoeless Joe deserved
a better looking card.

Incidently, the "red lipstick" can be found all over his face depending how well or how poor
the registration is. Leon, what do you make of that ?

Dear Gentlemen,

I've been lurking for a while but I still consider myself a newbie. It appears that Mastro runs the best auctions but I'm not sure. Which auction site should a newbie go to.

I've got 4 T-206's and I'm interested in buying more. Thanks on any advice you guys can give me.

PETER
