1916 Speaker unknown schedule card- Dunn Day
Posted By: leon
OK....here goes a mild long shot.....I just paid a good penny for this and am wondering if anyone knows anything about them. The seller tells me it's been in their family since 1916 and I tend to believe them. It has a blank back and is not a post card. ( I don't really collect post cards, yet). This is what they had to say in the description: |

I saw it when she had it with an opening bid of $500, and passed on it because of its unfamiliarity, which is probably the very thing that drove you to it. |

Wasn't Dunn the owner of the Indians around that time? My dad, who grew up near Cleveland in the late 1910s and 1920s (and idolized Tris Speaker), always called their park Dunn Field, rather than its official name, which I guess was League Park. |

It would not surprise me if it were in reference to Jack Dunn...although not sure what his connection to the Indians might have been. He was a popular coach, scout and player (Ruth's first coach if I recall)...anybody else have an idea? |

1916 Speaker unknown schedule card- Dunn Day

I had emailed the sellers asking if they would sell it the first time, for less than the $500. They weren't interested but did relist it with a $300 opening, and emailed me to tell me it was relisted.......I got it for the opening bid. You are correct in that since I have never seen one it drew me to it. If it would have had a postcard back I probably wouldn't have bought it. The fact it doesn't made me really want it. Not that there's anything wrong with postcards .... (also, your cards will go out tomorrow)......regards |

Jim Dunn was the owner of the Indians, and I believe bought the team from Charley Somers before the 1916 Season (or possibly 1915). He acquired Speaker from the Red Sox before the 1916 season, so the schedule is likely celebrating both the new owner and the new acquisition.. |
