Default 1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue

Sorry, I guess I should've been more clear!

It's a 1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue card of the legendary Bob Gibson. I had been searching for one for about 11 years now and couldn't be happier with the one I picked up. I was surprised at the relatively small size and thickness of the card stock, as I had imagined that it would be more "photo-like" in size and thickness. I was wrong on both fronts!!

The seller later e-mailed me the following: "this very card was on display earlier this summer when Bob Gibson's statue at Omaha's Werner Park was presented. Bob commented that he only remembered seeing one other and that was many years ago!"

It's a 24 card set (23 players, one header card)...I don't recognize any of the other names in the set but maybe the Cardinals collectors know a few.

You can find a common for about $20 on eBay every once in a while. I haven't checked recently...except to snag Mr. Gibson (for about the price of 50 commons).

1950 Philadelphia Bulletin Ashburn:

1951 Hage's Del Baker-Jim Reese:

1970 Atlanta Braves schedule w/great Hank Aaron graphics:

This doesn't even compared to the other October pickups so far, but I will post anyway as it has taken a long time to find this one.

Default Big mail day

Jackson RC was picked up in a large lot of 66s and has been eluding me forever as I'm trying to complete my 66 set.

Koufax RC was picked up from a fellow board member as I start to entertain the idea of going after the 55 set.

Real happy with both!

Congrats Rob, both great pick ups. Hard to believe how much the value of that Jackson RC continues to soar on Ebay!

I've been doing a lot of bottom trolling, picking up beater lots cheap. Here are a few all time Cardinals I found in some of them. The 74 Topps was picked up also. It has Brock on the back and Alex Johnson on the front.

Damn Phil! You were the one who got the Ripken!! Great pick-up!!! I'm so mad I didn't just do the BIN price...I tried a best offer but knew it would sell for full price.

Great for you that you were able to sell yours for 3.5x just a few months ago!!

Very glaf to see it went to you though vs. someone else.

Derek,

I'm moving along slowly, trying to find oddball RC's along with well-centered RC's of post-war players. I don't have my website updated yet. I'm way to busy right now working and helping my two kids with their new houses.

If money is tight, there's no way you're going after it right now...already at $10k + juice (at PSA 4!!!!!)...incredible what's going on with the Ripken rookies (orange and blue)!!

Damn, I'd always wanted to get one of those Ripkens eventually. Looks like, even in bad condition, they've worked their way out of my typical price range

Anyways, some great pickups this month guys.. Especially the rookies.

I feel your pain. I have overshot my budget. My wife has been very cool about it this time. So, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I am going to have to knock off for a while.

Yeah. It's not so much, dropping out of the game for a bit, that get's me the most. But that, when I don't have any disposable money, all the stuff I've been looking for pops up for cheap, and keeps trying to suck me back in.. Already a day into deciding that I need to drop out for a bit, I'm already fighting off the urge on 2 items right now. I've got a feeling I'm gonna cave in and get one of 'em..Hopefully not both.

So bid 'em up guys, and save me the troubles..

Yep, I can definitely relate. Every time I think about the need to step back for a little bit, something unexpected ALWAYS pops up. And, yes, I am addicted.

Holy Toledo, pawpawdiv9!!! How blatant on the shill bidding. 51 retractions in 6-months? 70% activity with the seller? Just horrible.

There are some sellers I don't even bother with because of the obvious shill bidding. Too bad because there are some nice items that I would have gotten into from time to time.

There's always someone out there looking to corrupt a process, especially if they can make a little more money.

Hahah, thanks Chris. Fortunately, my fiancé takes care of the dog herself, and she has no room to complain regarding my treatment of her. So, might as well get some cards right?

Default Now and After

She is your fiance now Chris. After you are married you get to take care of the dog and handle complaints about cards

Haha, which is why I am trying my best to complete my collection before the wedding!

I should add that I am very fortunate that she supports my collecting, although I am not entirely sure she understands it or can appreciate why money is better spent on cards rather than jewelry.

Do yourself a favor: create a spreadsheet listing your entire collection then a few days before the wedding print it and mail it to yourself via certified mail. When it arrives, don't open it, just put it aside. Just in case there ever comes a day when you have to show what assets you came into the marriage owning.

These two are a HUGE pick up for me. They may not be world beaters, but they represent the last two cards I needed to complete the 1957 set!

With that set complete I now only need to finish the 1958 set (38 cards) before I have every base set back to 1954.

This is very neat. If you don't mind me asking, where did you pick this up at?
