Hi Nelson,

I weighed in on the pre-war side but will share my post-war goals here.

2013 Goal: My 2013 goal was to add 20-30 Mantles to my collection. I think I ended up somewhere around 40-50, including several big additions (52 Topps and a couple Venezuelans).

2014 Goal: I am getting married in 2014, so a lot of what would otherwise be spent on cards will be going to wedding expenses. That said, I am very pleased about the acquisition As far as cards go, I collect nationally issued Mantle cards, foreign issued Mantle cards, and several of the more popular postcard issues (Holiday Inn, JD McCarthy). I hope to add the last Mantle I need for my nationally issued set (all U.S. cards except the test and regional issues), another Venezulan, and one or two more postcards.

I know you've got at least one of the big ones out of the way. How far along are you with the rest?

Default 2014 goals

Glad you started this thread. I have enjoyed reading the pre-war thread.

2013: Just completed Hank Aaron Topps regular issue cards 1954-1976 (the 1954 RC should arrive in a couple of days!). I got impatient and wound up completing this sooner than I planned, thus blowing my budget even though it is a mid-grade set.

2014: after the Aaron project, I have decided to try to complete a HOF player set per year (base cards only, not All-Stars, leaders, etc. like I did with the Aarons). As a Braves fan, Warren Spahn will be my project in 2014. Most are pretty affordable. The '48 Leaf and '52 Topps will probably be the most challenging. With fewer cards than Aaron, I will hopefully spend less and save a little money (yeah, right).

2013 Goal was to whittle down the want list a bit. Towards that end I picked up a few more Topps salesman samples, an empty wax box ('59 Fleer, to finish off Topps/Bowman/Fleer/Leaf from '50 on), a few '58 Hires Tests with tabs, and upgraded the '51 Redback set from singles to all panels. Overall pretty happy but I'm missing an odd card here and there to finish some sets that I should've picked up.

So for 2014- pick up the dozen cards I"m missing from '49 and '50 Bowman and '63 Topps, add another Topps Salesman Sample or two, track down another Hires Test with tab, and get down to the last handful of '47-66 Exhibit cards to wrap up that set, or at least come close.
Also, sell off the pile of dupes and pull off 2 more Culver City Card shows in the spring and fall, with increased attendance.

2013 I was a bit of a mutt, with a focus on ungraded 52 Topps.

2014 I will be working on completing a very nice 73 Topps set.

I took several months off from collecting in 2013 only to get back into it this past summer. Unfortunatley I lost my job around the same time so I had to cut back on my collecting somewhat.

That being said, for 2014, for baseball my goal is to work on all Topps regular issued cards of some favorite players such as Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Tony Oliva. I have most of Williams and Santo's cards and a few of Oliva's.

I am not a set builder when it comes to baseball, only football, but do love some of the sub-sets such as the Topps All Star Rookie cards. My goal is to finish the All Star Rookies from the 1965 set and start and complete the All Star rookies from the 1963 set.

My guess is along the way in 2014 there might be something else I feel I need to collect.

2013- I didnt set any goals for 2013 as I was out of collecting this time last year, for the most part. I obviously got back into and acquired cards I like from the big names in Post War (Mantle, Mays, Aaron and Clemente) in as high grade as I could afford.

2014- I am down to just a few more Post War Rookies that I need and would like to add the rookie cards of the following: 51 Bowman Willie Mays, 48 Leaf Jackie Robinson, 54 Topps Ernie Banks, 55 Topps Koufax, 68 Topps Nolan Ryan, 68 Topps Johnny Bench and 62 Topps Lou Brock. Very doubtful that I acquire all of those cards next year, but assuming I did, I will turn my attention to Pre-War cards going forward with the following on my radar: 39 PB Williams RC, 33 Goudey Ruth #144 and #149, T206 Cobb Bat OFF, T206 Young Throwing, T206 Walter Johnson, T206 Cobb Green Portrait.

In reality that is probably my collecting goal for the next 5 years.

I made great progress in 2013 on my Topps/Bowman Cardinals team run from 1948-1980. I hope to wrap it up in 2014, I'm down below 15 cards, though most of them are Hi numbers and big names (Musial, Slaughter, etc).

New guy here, started collecting in October of 2013. So far I have been collecting HOFers from the 50s and 60s that are PSA graded. I felt this was the best way to avoid being ripped off since I'm new.

With the help of some great folks on here I have started exploring some raw cards and even purchased a few 1953 Bowman raws (waiting on them to arrive). I ordered a 10x Loupe and and halogen desk lamp.

My goals for 2014 are to learn more about raw cards, continue to purchase them and get a better understanding of evaluating raw cards.

Your heading into the same battlefield i been in the last several months.
I been placing bids anywhere and everywhere for nice:
51 Bowman Mays RC, 54 Hank Aaron RC, Clemente RC, 52 Pafko #1 and placed a few pre-war bids on Cobb/Ruth and last night a Wagner.
Sometimes i venture into football RC's, i like to add a nice Ditka RC, Landry/Gifford RCs

2013-- i vastly collected a bunch of Mantles (main focus) at the end i finally got my 52 RC. My list is about done.. Selling off the other regular issues to make room for newer additions.
In all. i got some nice cards and helped out some individuals on the board.

I'll be upgrading a few 60's Mets cards, knocking at least one or two remaining cards off the Topps type run and adding more Topps corporate items to the collection. Beyond baseball I plan to work on my '49 Topps Flags and License Plate sets, Bowman NY Football Giants team set and the Wild Man and Wild West sets. I think that's about it.

2013 was a success! Finished the 1954 Red Heart Dog Food set (I'm a sucker for the smallish/food-issue sets).

2014 Goal: Finish the 1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips set -- I'm 4 cards away and already have The Mick.

Finish up some sets:

1964 Topps Giants high grade set - 54/60
1964 Topps Giants signed set - 49/60
1986-87 Fleer Basketball all SGC 96 -121/132

Would like to make some more progress with my PostWar HOF RC set as well. Maybe pick up a nice '54 Aaron or a '51 Bowman Mays.

http://www.sgccardregistry.com/set.a...5&userset=4648

Also I am on the fence about starting a PostWar HOF signed RC project as well. I have about 10 or so, but i know I won't be able to acquire some...ever. Still mulling...

Default 2014 Goals

I would like to finish my '52 Topps set. I am missing some high numbers and the Page/Sain error as well as 2 other Campos variations (I have 1 red star / black star thanks to a board member). Al-R has got me thinking about trying to complete variations within the set....

If I do so, I will probably never finish given the infamous mid-series gray backs much less trying to pick up the "glossy" mid-series gray backs. I don't think I have ever even seen a mid-series glossy gray back.

Which leads to the question....at what point will I be "done" collecting the '52 Topps set?

Well, last night I purchased a 1958 Topps, J.W. Porter Yellow Name Variation card. That was the last card I needed to complete the 1958 master set of all cards and all variations.

So at the moment I'm at a loss for what comes next, aside from better organizing and presenting my collection.

I'll continue to add to my Ripken collection as I always do.

Other than that, I'm contemplating the following, indecisively at the moment:

1955 or 1956 Topps
Hank Bauer
Random Type Collecting/whatever cards strike my fancy

Default Topps Aaron run

I just completed my Hank Aaron Topps 1954-76 Topps regular issue collection. I was able to complete it pretty reasonably as I was lucky on some auctions and was willing to buy mid-grade cards. I will probably upgrade some in the future, but I am pretty excited to finish this as Hank is my favorite all-time player.

That is awesome Ed, congratulations.

Question for you. Of these regular issued cards, do you have a favorite and runner up?

Thanks Erik,

My favorite is 1957. The colors are great plus I love how the stadium scene is in the background. Overall, just a beautiful card.

My runner-up is the 1974 (main card) for sentimental instead of aesthetic reasons. 1974 is the first year I collected cards. It was also the year Hank broke Ruth's record and, as a kid growing up in Atlanta, this was a magical time.

Hard to argue with your first choice. I lean towards the 1967 issue myself.

And, my second is the 1975 Topps, Brewers one, for sentimental reasons as well. It was the first year I collected cards. I pulled one from a pack at the end of my street back in the midwest and proceeded to trade it right away for a Dick Allen, who was my favorite player at the time for the White Sox. Though it was not his last card it was neat to turn the card over and look at all the years of stats on the card.
