Those borders have been abused more than Alsace-Lorraine.

Centering is off obviously not not a bad looking 3. Probably ends 20k+. Ruth is hot, prices are still low compared to Jackie, Mays and others.

I picked up the yellow, green, and red last year. Shattered a vcp record each time. They all look like steals now. And are still undervalued.

Agreed. I remember when I went to a 12k bid on that 4.5 yellow that you wound up winning— I made a rare mistake hewing far too close to past sales data, and should have bid way more. Made sure not to err the same way when the next one I liked came into the crosshairs.

These four Ruth cards are such classics and tend to stay in collections as beloved centerpieces. Their popularity with collectors and investors alike is just off the charts. They've increased in price yet I agree still could go much higher. And boy is that red #149 a beast to find with some eye appeal. Hence why I took my lumps bidding to win the 4 at Heritage last week.

There’s a 3 right now in the BST. I nearly choked when I saw the asking price of $30k.

I almost choked when I saw BST listings as well...kills me I sold my yellow ruth vg-ex a few years ago for less than 3k.

And it seems we all agree that goudey ruth prices are cray cray although some seem to believe they are still underpriced?

DOES ANYONE THINK THIS CARD I POSTED LOOKS LIKE IT HAS HAD ERASURE ON LEFT TOP OF CARD IN THE RED...DAMMIT!!!!

I agree it looks like something was erased. I have 2 1939 Play Ball cards that had writing on the borders that was erased and they both got number grades from SGC. I thought erasures were supposed to get an A grade only. My Arky Vaughan got a 1.5 and my Charlie Keller got a 2. Here is a scan of the Vaughan.

This recent sale amazes me:

https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=75530

$90,000 for a mid-grade (a really nice one, to be sure) Goudey Ruth! And it's in REA, so you know the sale is legit.

I did some digging and found the most recent previous sale of this exact card was for $10,200 in Heritage in Feb. 2018.

Amazing!!!!!!!!

They are underpriced. Bump this thread in 6 months. 30k for a dead centered red PSA 3 will sound like a bargain.

Bought this one last year. Unfortunately funds are limited and I'm after a couple other cards. Otherwise I would.

If one assumes the card hasn't been trimmed, then this is not a 3, it is likely a 5 or 6. So, maybe SGC saw the erasure (hard to tell if there is one without having it in hand) and docked it the 2 points to give it a 3 because they don't have the PSA MK designation.

I honestly don't see any erasing. I only see soaking in bleach solution and batwings due to the razor trimming and undersized borders.

messing with the contrast, etc...I sure believe I see erasure/remnants from writing!

The Gehrigs are surging, too. Looks like 3s are flirting with 6k and a nice 3 could have been copped off eBay for around $2750 last year. Heck I remember the green PSA 4 I found on the BST was sitting for a few days and it was being offered for a few hundred south of the prior sale for the grade at the time. I found myself going back to look at it every day and so pulled the trigger— glad to have caved in.

Regret selling the ones I had last year. Agree with the comments of the Goudeys being undervalued especially compared to others. Much lower pops, iconic set and not to mention the GOAT. Those three things alone should put these 5x10 higher than any mantle, Robinson, mays, Cobb. He’s the jordan of baseball and should command huge premiums over others.

Pete - good sleuth work. I see it.

Why did it get a 3?
Card looks sharp (aside from the, ya know, surface distraction).

I’m shocked at how expensive these things have gotten.

I remember before I was married at a card show in the early 2000's, having the opportunity to buy a PSA 1 Goudey Ruth for like $700. I didn't do it, though I had spent similar money at the time for things like an upper midgrade Aaron RC. Oh well, they say hindsight is 20-20.

Default opinions on the goudey ruth

A red psa 4 ends tommorrow with pwcc will be interesting to see where it closes. Two crappy 4s just did over 27k at goldin.

I lucked out same era, probably 2001, scored both the green background and batting Ruths for roughly $750 on a single eBay auction. Think they were poorly listed/photographed, and had the "found in the attic" type description that many avoid. However also seemed like there were so many more of them back then, and probably far fewer eyes searching for them, so things actually could slip through the cracks. The 144 was raw reviewed a 2 by Beckett at a card show, the green is still raw, but similar condition wise.

one thing that stands out to me for the red vs the others is the pop. The yellow has always been regarded as the "most valuable and lowest pop" which it still is. However, looking at the total psa population report, the yellow is currently at 1022 with the red a mere 20 more at 1042. The red sales for significantly less than the yellow, at least recently with the latest results on the yellows. Will the red catch up to the recent yellow prices? Populations suggest prices should be similar.

I know it's after the fact, but I predicted that this one would be the first Goudey Ruth 3 to ever top $20,000. If there are no hidden creases, that card just isn't a 3 . . . just no way.

No, erasures are not a deal-breaker. I submitted a nice Dizzy Dean '34 Goudey last year to SGC, and it got a 3 despite a front corner pencil mark that was erased. It likely cost me a full grade though.

I think I've only seen one sgc 2 with writing otherwise standard 1.5 fr writing even if card is Ex. This may have changed with the new regime

Like this card. If it didn't have the erasure marks (not sure that's what they are but that's my guess), I would love to own it. But I would pay more for presentable 3 without erasure marks than I would for this card. That being said, I'm much less concerned with corners and centering than most, and much more concerned about sharpness and colors (no fading!). To some, the other aspects of this card might outweigh the flaws. I wonder what it would have graded without them?

You think passing on one at prices between a few hundred and up is bothersome?

When I started collecting I hung out at a local dealer. (77-83 ish) It wasn't uncommon for them to hand me a solid VG Goudey Ruth and say "It's $100 you should buy it". Probably happened 10-15 times....

When I started collecting I hung out at a local dealer. (77-83 ish) It wasn't uncommon for them to hand me a solid VG Goudey Ruth and say "It's $100 you should buy it". Probably happened 10-15 times....
What the hell was I doing then? Buying 1969-1972 Topps commons trying to finish sets. I could've dropped $100 on a Ruth. But that's only one card and I can have hundreds of cards if not thousands for that price. DUH!

I predicted the same when this thread started. After last night's sale I'm sure the buyer is pleased with what he paid for this.

The 144 does seem like a relative bargain as mentioned above. My favorite of the 4 by far. Just such an iconic image, even if a few extra were produced. Maybe the same type of collectors paying big premiums for t206 portraits prefer the red and yellow to the 144 and green Ruths.

Why do people still treat PWCC results as if they're real?

Of course there are some going to be some sketchy results, but there are some 100% legit results as well. I had some pretty amazing cards of mine sell via PWCC within the past month, and can guarantee there was nothing shady. I certainly won't say that's always the case, and only can tell you about my specific ones, but just be careful painting everything with such a broad brush.

I have over 2 years of selling on PWCC and literally on over 200 auctions of my cards.......I have had maybe 3 non payers.

Small sample size maybe? No....I'd say....results! It seems the more naysayers, the results keep getting better!

Peace, Mike

How many collectors do you personally know that are debating or are selling?

How many collectors do you know personally that are buying?

That should answer any questions about the direction of the hobby
