In the conversation I had with Richie Ashburn (in 1995), he told me that every Spring training season
during the 1950's, the sports media would time both he and Mickey to see who was the fastest to 1st
base. Year after year, using a stop-watch, both him and Mickey were exactly even at 3.0 secs.

As a kid, who avidly followed the Yankees in the '50s, I recall reading in The Sporting News that Mickey
batting left-handed would get to 1st base in 3.0 secs. and batting right-handed his time was 3.3 secs.

So, Ashburn's recollection was very consistent with the numbers I remember.
