Default T212 Obak Cards with "Gilliam Squires" name stamp

I just acquired a small batch of 7 T212 Obak PCL tobacco cards, and all of them are stamped with the name "Gilliam Squires" on the backs. Is there any hobby significance to that name?

Regards,

Bryan Dec

Bryan,
They have been in circulation for decades, along with Bishop & Co cards. No real 'premium' , but no discount for the writing either...Mark

I believe there is at least one collector that is actively seeking Gilliam's stamps but I can't remember who it is. Mark is right though, no real premium for his stamps like there seems to be for Ed's Howe McCormick stamps now.

I am a (the?) current collector of Gilliam Squires stamped cards. He (for at least a time) lived in San Jose, CA, very close to my parents' home. I typically focus on players, but do collect this one collector/stamp. Let me know if you have any interest in selling. I'm especially interested in the Hogan card because he played for Santa Clara University (about 5 miles from where Squires lived).

There is a collector amongst us for everything!! I have had a few of these over the years. Good luck in the hunt.

Reviving this older post. I just realized I have a Gilliam Squires stamped card. I love the back stamped personalized cards. Gives them a bit more character, especially when it doesn't really take away from the grade

I'll take any excuse to get another flood of cool cards posted to look at!

Bill

There was a Gilliam Squires that was in 2nd grade in a California school in 1905.

Hey Patrick- any idea which San Jose school? His connection with San Jose is the reason why I collect (sort of) these cards.

According to the 1910 US Federal Census, there was a Gilliam H. Squires, 14 years old, who lived at 1755 Bush St in San Francisco, just west of Nob Hill. It says he was born in Montana, and his father was a clergyman/preacher.

In the 1900 census, his family lived at 423 South Seventh St in Santa Clara.

In the 1920 census, his family had moved a few blocks SW to 652 Baker St, and his occupation was "actor".

In the 1930 census, he's living in Santa Cruz, and it says his occupation was a "stage actor".

Then, in 1936 - 1942, he shows up in voter listings, living in Santa Clara, still with the occupation "actor". In 1936, his address was 714 Main in Santa Clara, and then in 1938 and 1942, he lived at 1818 The Alameda.

Thanks Patrick and Steve. Very helpful. The last two are in an area of San Jose called the Rose Garden, which is very close to where I grew up. I had seen a mention of the Rose Garden somewhere online, but your info makes it clear. Thank you!
