Cobb show and tell ~ wisdom from the experienced to the new guys

Seems like there are a lot more of somewhat new collectors asking several questions. Cobb seems to be a frequent topic.

Instead of just "show your card" how about if you show your Cobb and briefly explain perhaps what they should expect to pay and/or the true value? Variety is key, from the very lowest end to the mid-high, knowns to unknowns and don't forget the oddballs. Let's try not to show the same card.

Sure everyone can scan ebay or compare at other places but nothing is better than getting it from the source (where it's known to be real) with a picture showing the condition to boot.

If it works maybe we can go on to other high profile names, such as Ruth, Wagner or Matty.

Not really a card but a W601 Composite of the 1905 Detroit Tigers, Cobb's very first Major League Baseball appearance. Only seen one other example of this one and I believe it sold at auction for $2,000+ a few years ago.

This is my 1907 Dietsche Cobb Fielding postcard. One of a set of 16 Detroit player cards. There are two Cobbs in the set. Batting and Fielding. This Fielding variation is the toughest.

My copy is poorly trimmed at the top but in this condition is probably still worth $300. In nice Ex condition this is a $1,500+ card.

Here's a 1923 W572. It's one of the few strip cards that actually used real photographs, rather then the sometimes cheap looking drawings. Got this for around $100. Maybe overpaid a bit, but it is a Cobb.

Not the best picture ever. This is one of only two T206's I own. The Cobb Bat Off with a Sovereign 350 back. You could probably expect to pay somewhere between 1000-1200 for this card according to VCP.

One of the best looking cards of Cobb, or anyone else, for that matter. My 2008 SCD catalog says $9000 in VG. This card would grade no higher than VG-EX at best since there is a barely perceptible horizontal wrinkle behind Cobb's back about 3-4 inches long. At $15K in ex and $35K in NM, $9K doesn't look so bad, relatively speaking. I bought this card ten years ago for under $1600. I'm sure other folks have more up to date pricing info. Cards with lesser technical grades but still "present well," as they say, are certainly out there.

Some of my favorite oddball non-card Cobbs are...

1911 T332 Helmar stamp - I paid less than $100 approx. 10 years ago. You don't see them too often. Mastro or REA have had a few examples in the last 10 years or so and topped $500, if memory serves correct. There is one on ebay SGC Auth with BIN of $650.



1909-12 PX7 Sweet Caporal (Domino discs). I don't think I've paid over $200 for any of mine. There is one on ebay from the same seller as the Helmar stamp with BIN of $995. I have seen non-graded examples sell in the $300 range and high-grade graded examples being offered for over $1000 on ebay.

A couple of mine - this E220 has sold a few times according to VCP, ranging from $500 to $1000. This came from eBay earlier this year (thanks Leon!).

The P-2 pin is probably somewhere around $700 or so. Had this one for 6-8 years.

I've always liked the T-202's, and I'll take a discounted price for the poor centering. This one set me back about $500 - $600 a few years ago.

Picked this up maybe 6-7 years ago for $200 from a friend who just said he had a Cobb. I was expecting a T205, so when he pulled this out of his pocket I was ecstatic. Later he said I got him on it, which is debatable, so I let him get me on a future deal or two.

A recent pickup and one that I've had for 5 years or so:

The Wolverine News postcard came via a board member in a trade/purchase within the past two months. I'd put the value at $1,500-$2,000, depending how much the number on the slab matters to you. For me, it's irrelevant because the image on the postcard is nice. The low grade is in part because of the writing on the reverse and the fact the PC is postally used. However, the content in part is about the 1909 World Series between the Pirates and Tigers, and the PC was mailed during the Series, so I'll take the poor grade in that trade-off. An example of this postcard that was 2-4 grades higher (I forget exactly) sold at auction in the neighborhood of $2,500 recently.

The Willard's Chocolates came from Lew Lipset via an eBay auction. Again, the low grade is mostly because of some minor writing and scrapbook remnants on the reverse. Because these cards are blank-backed, those flaws don't bother me a bit. I paid in the range of $400, but again, this was about 4-5 years ago. I've always thought this was a fairly mainstream card, but I've seen it on quite a few want lists in the past year or so. I don't collect Willard's per se, but I think they're pretty tough to find in really nice condition.
