Default E104-1 Nadja values all over the map: Why?

Recently got interested in an E104-1 Nadja (you know, Philly Athletics 1910) which I had never looked into before at all. Amazed by how hard to judge value, and not just due to the different types: with and without blank banks, with and without "World's Champions" added. Price guides and actual sales prices even bigger disparity than usual. The World's Champs seem most valuable, but then again, maybe not. Anyone "expert" on this issue?

In terms of value and rarity -

nadja backed >>> world champ > blank

I think the reason why they range widely in value is because so few people collect them, and if one slips under the cracks it will go for a really small price. Also - they seem to go for a lot more in Goodwin Auctions than in ebay.

I've been collecting them for a few years now - have about 30 amongst the 3 series. Most of them are blanked back but I do have a few nadja and world champ. The nadja ones rarely come up - and when I have seen one I have paid aggressively.

It's a great set (actually, all of the sub-series are great).

Default Personally, I prefer the E104-IIIs

to the E104-I's, but I think that is because I like the Phillies more than the A's.

I've always liked this particularly E104-I, though. Would be better if it was Nadja-backed, but all E104s are exceptionally tough in anything above low-to-medium grade

What's the ranking of scarcity for the e104-1s? World Champion's blank back, Non-World Champ Nadja back, non-World Champ blank back? Or no?

They will EITHER have the Champions logo on front Or the Nadja back....or the blank back. There won't be any with the Nadja back AND the Champions front. As Pete said in order of rarity from most rare to least...

Nadja back, Champions front logo, blank back

All three E104 sets are beautiful in their artwork, in my opinion. Here is my Nadja backed Type 1

So, most scarce is: Non-World Champ front with Nadja back, then World Champ front with blank back, then Non-World Champ front with blank back?

Yes, or to be a bit less verbose, nadja back, champion front, blank back.

And not to go too far off topic I am not sure sure the type 2 cards aren't the scarcest of the 3 sets with the Nadja back, even though type 3s are always thought to be the scarcest.

If you read posts 2 and 7 they will answer your questions. But, the E104-1s come one of 3 ways.

1. most common - no Champions logo on front and blank back-
2. less common - Champions logo on front and blank back-
3. least common - no Champions logo on front and Nadja back-

hope that clarifies it.

If you want a good idea of what the values aren't on these cards, check the Buy-It-Nows on ebay.

I am pretty amazed when you look at pop reports for E104 (all variations) as compared to most of the other E or T sets, that their value/appeal isn't higher. Especially for cards like Plank or Wagner that share the classic T206 poses, but are more rare. I guess it's an example of popularity being as much if not far more influential than rarity in dictating values. T206 seems to have that perfect combo of being readily available, aiding its overall poplularity, leading to more collectors.. so when a card within that popular set is relatively rare with respect to the rest of the population (100 Wagners or Planks vs thousands of the more common cards), prices go through the roof.

All cards in E104 (and other similarly tough sets) are so scarce, it can only be collected by a relative few and thus demand stays low. I only have one E104, but hope to add a few more time... especially a Nadja back.

About 10-12 years ago, a few of us on here were collecting them and competing pretty hard, but the type 1s and 2s have cooled since then.

Type 3s will always be appealing to me and many others. Still a lot of possibilities with that set and I believe a couple uncatalogued cards in collections.

I look at them all as separate issues.

I have this Collins with WC overprint and the Swift stamp on the back.
I can live without it, as it was just a placeholder in my d359-1 set.
PM if interested.
