Default 1965 Topps High Series SPs

Here's a scan of one slit from the 7th series of 1965. I have also attached a number summary of the cards shown in this sheet. Although these cards are not as scarce as their 66 or 67 brethren, it is readily apparent that the short prints identified in recent price guides are not necessarily borne out by the card placements within the slit. For example, both Brock & Powell are normally identified as SPs, when in fact, they should not be (although they are "high demand"). Conversely, the Beckert RC (549) is in a SP row, but is not listed as a SP.

Although I haven't seen the second slit from this series, I surmise that the "true" Sps from this series are the cards contained in the rows headed by Twins Rookies, Hiller, Smith, & Broglio.

Default Topps high checklist

Because checklists for most series were printed in multiple print runs, they should appear in a SP row for a 77 card series (i.e., a row printed 3x across the two slits). This is because they would be double printed (3x in prior series, 3x in current series). Usually, but not always, the bottom row on each slit was a row printed 3x, so a checklist might appear in that row.

This does not apply for checklist #1 since it was only printed in series 1 print run but it was double-printed in that run. Series 1 for many Topps years in the 1960s had 109 unique cards. These cards would be distributed as ten unique rows of 11 cards each, with the checklist # 1 appearing twice (110 - 1 = 109). The ten unique rows typically had four rows appearing 3x and the remaining six rows appearing 2x (thus a total of 24 rows, 264 cards). Sometimes, checklist #1 was printed 5x (in other words, it was in one of the 3x rows and one in the 2x rows) but I also have seen it in two of the 3x rows (so it was printed 6x).

Thx for the update. I was wondering if the 1966 high (517 W sox) checklist would follow suit and be in the bottom corner of the slit in the Grant row,

Default 1966 topps checklist

# 517 will be in either row B (perranowki), row C (Hoerner), or row G (Jackson). Row F (mantilla) is also a SP row, but we know every card in that row.
