Default New scammer technique using BST?

Wondering if anyone else has seen this and/or has a solution (other than to ignore)… over the weekend, I posted 2 separate “want to buy” posts in BST and within hours I received an e-mail to my linked e-mail with an image of the card I am looking for with a very simple “What is your offer?” tag.

The first time, it took me one or two exchanges with the scammer before I finally figured out it was BS. I asked for his Net54 user ID because I knew that was the only place that I posted my search.

I did the same thing this morning on a second post and immediately ask the scammer for his Net54 user ID.

Both said they found my post on Google - does anyone know how to limit my BST posts to only Net54 so I/we can avoid the goofball scammers?

Jeff

They are lying. They can't get to the BST through Google, as far as I know. The BST area is password protected. I think the scammers are just finding a hole in the s/w, get in and create a user id, and then the scamming attempts begin.
And don't be fooled if they give you a good id. They do that frequently but their id they use doesn't match the real member. ALWAYS PM me if there is any question.....

Love this pose...

Leon - don't know if this would be doable or if it would just be a huge pain in your you know what . . . .but what about a system like Twitter where people who are know entities and have successfully done BST transactions in the past get a verified blue checkmark, gold star, or some other kind of designation? Maybe too much work and aggravation . . . .

I don't know of a way to easily do that. Members really need to look at the person they are interacting with and look at their profile. If they just registered then you really need to be careful.
Some members put the members whom they have done transactions with, at least some of them, in their sig lines.... That can help too.

Does anybody know what their end game is?

I have been contacted by 8 separate email addresses, most with pictures obviously taken from Ebay (one still had Dean's watermark). But they always agree to Good and Services. What is their ultimate plan to scam money? PayPal buyer protections are water tight (some would say too good). I just don't understand.

Literally just received the same email from Frank Thompson thompsonfrank237@gmail.com and after asking for his Username got this back:

“I am not on Net54. I came across your WTB on Google on the forum.
No, it doesn't have any creases or wrinkles on it.
Paypal Goods and services???”

Had this same issue with 2 different responses in my request for a Willie Mays signed card. One would’ve been more then I’ve ever spent on a card, they were able to “coin” the image with my name and todays date but was still very fishy so I had to back away from the deal. One of the things that threw me off even on the coining of the image is they used the international way of writing the date 27/6/22 instead of 6/27/22.

Half of me wants to post the following in the BST. However, I don't want to clutter up that forum with sarcastic trash.

WTB - Modern rookie cards of bad players

I like to take risks; gambling on long shots is my favorite thing to do. Looking for ultra-modern rookies the hobby gave up on. If I buy enough of them, my luck is bound to change.

I don't want to leave a paper trail; if my wife finds out I spent money on cards, she'd make my life hell. So, cash or US Postal money order only. NO PAYPAL.

Hit me up and let me know what you've got. My email is:

LOL...that would be a nice response.

Members should look and see if the scammer is already banned too. It seems they get banned and keep trying to get to our members. Be careful...

I wanted to highlight a piece of your original post if I may please.....IGNORE

I know it stinks these types have "infiltrated" the site and continue to do so, but one huge piece of advice I would like to share is that the less you interact with these idiots the better.

The more interactions you have with scammers, regardless of how benign, the odds favor the scammer, they do this for a "living" and you would be surprised with the amount of information a scammer can gather from you just through replies (in some cases).

Just my 2-cents......and just trying to help.

Yep, if you ever try to access any page in BST without being logged in, you're taken to a login page. That goes for us too...anytime I clear my cache/cookies and then hop back on the board, I'm unable to see any posts or even pages within BST without first signing in.

In short, it's actually impossible to access BST without an account here first.

I tend to agree. However, never underestimate a POS scammer. Everything is impossible...until it isn't.

Clarification #1: None of this post is directed at shammus (a stand-up member, in good standing)
Clarification #2: I do not know a way to circumvent the login, nor do I advocate the pursuit of this knowledge
Clarification #3: Scammers are lying, cheating, stealing scumbags...who occasionally excel at lying, cheating, and stealing. Stay vigilant!

It happened to me a month or two ago. Has made me reluctant to submit any LTB posts.
