Not pre-war baseball, but I thought this was really funny! I can't believe Mantle would grant the auto seekers request.

Likely, the fan didn't request the salutation and Mickey wasn't sober.

The most classless act I ever say regarding an autograph was a friend of mine that used to hang out at the Black Angus in San Leandro, CA where a lot of the A's players used to hang out. He had gotten all of the 1987 A's to sign the ball except Canseco and was saving teh sweet spot for him. When finally got ahold of Canseco, he turn ed the ball and signed his name across a bunch of other names.

At least Mantle could blame the booze. Canseco was just a jerk.

Jay, that sucks. What an a-hole Canseco is/was. It does give me great pleasure at this point, therefore, to see how miserable his life is now. Soon he'll be getting paid to show up at Bar Mitzvahs in South Florida...

I got several Mantle autographs in person and that ball looks suspicious to my amateur eye. I'm not questioning the inscription (who knows?), but it doesn't look like a good sig to me.
