the blue background is always worth more than the pastel and the black back is always worth more than the blue black.

scarcity dictates value, therefore the higher value indicates the rarer variation

I disagree with the first part, but agree with the second. For example, there are far fewer Cy Young blue backs (at least per the SGC/PSA pop reports) than the black backs. Plus the blue back card has a better looking image than the black back card. The scarcity of the Young blue back dictates its higher value due to the rarer variation.

Lajoies are tougher in pastel than in blue. Blue is NOT always scarcer than pastel. One look at a grading company's population reports will show you that the cards in Series 1 of the M116 issue are scarcer in blue backgrounds, but the cards in Series 2 (including Lajoie) are tougher in pastel than in blue.

The black vs. blue (like Cy Young) is another issue altogether. This pertains to the printing on the back of the card. It has long been believed that the black backs are tougher, but again one look at pop reports will tell you that the reverse is true.

Hope this helps--
