Default January Autograph Pickups

Happy New Year to all.

I'm happy to have been able to recently pick up this nice vintage signed 3 x 5 of Gas House Gang no-hit pitcher Paul "Daffy" Dean.
As the card states, Dean signed this card in March of 1939.
Love these fountain pen autographs!

Paul Dean pitched his no-hitter on September 21, 1934 in game 2 of a doubleheader. Brother Dizzy Dean pitched and also got a win in game 1 of the DH.

That's a beautiful piece! I love that it has a period photo attached as well!

Here's one that I just picked up, a seldom seen signature of William "Kayo" Lam, quarterback/halfback for the University of Colorado from 1933-1935. Lam led the nation in rushing yards back to back years and was the first CU athlete to play in a post-season all star game, the 1936 East-West game. Lam was a very achomplished man over eight decades and one of my personal favorites when it comes to our alumni at the University of Colorado.

Lam signed the 3x5 at the above mentioned East-West game in what would be his final time padding up for Colorado.

Scott,

That one is originally from the Harold Esch collection, obtained in person at spring training. He didn't usually attach a photo, though.

Thank you for the information about who's collection it came out of.
I actually like to document provenance whenever I can trace it back to the original collector.

Had a Monster mail day yesterday with #282 and #283, leaving me with exactly 50 HOFers left. Have no idea if/when/who will be next. They are all rare and expensive from this point on.

I was never in a rush for either 2, as they are commonly available if you had the money. That said, Ruth has really gone up this year....so I bit the bullet. Gehrig was just happy circumstances.

As for next....probably the most common name I need is Christy Mathewson, but I want a check and that is never cheap. If I can add one or two current HOFer in 2021, I will be ecstatic. More likely is working on upgrades and searching for old "potential" HOF.

I was able to pick up an unique baseball with an Indianapolis history. It is signed by a number of individuals connected to the 1948-49 Indianapolis Indians team as well as a few random signatures.

AL LOPEZ - Indians Manager 1948-51
OWEN DONIE BUSH - Co-owner of the Indians and Detroit Tigers Shortstop
JAMES (JIM) "JUNIOR" WALSH - Played with the Indians 47-49
HARRY GIESEL - MLB umpire 1925-1942 - Called two no hitters.
TONY HINKLE (NCAA HOF 1965) Butler Coach
CLYDE KLUTTZ - MLB debut 1942 (BOSTON), Played in Indianapolis 1949-50
AL FEENEY - Indianapolis Mayor 1948-1950, Pro football player (NFL 1920-21*), died in office 1950. Also played semi pro basketball in Indiana for the Indianapolis En-Roes.
FRANK E. MCKINNEY - Co-owner of the Indians
LUKE WALTON - Longtime play-by-play radio broadcaster for Indianapolis
CULLEY RIKARD
BOB GANSS - Played for the Indians during 48-50. Passed during the 1953 season in Panama.

Default Rube Benton

Won this one over at Hunt, while I am a little bit questioning the authenticity, it did come with a JSA LOA (only Benton's Ive seen were in a shaky hand)

Rube Benton, 1917 WS game 3 winner, and key person in testimony to baseball gambling that led to the unearthing of the 1919 Black Sox scandal

I have had a couple of Benton autographs and all were a bit shaky even when he was young and active (1920's). I doubt as a pitcher he had an impairment, I think he might have been functionally illiterate like Joe Jackson. I could be wrong and that is pure speculation.

I've always wanted a signed '61 Maris, simply for the magic of that year. Most of them I've seen have a faded signature or are signed small/off-center, but this one is simply beautiful. Perfect, bold, centered signature and a new card to the hobby.

W/o the auto this is one of my top 10 favorite cards. That auto is gorgeous. Wonderfully placed, viewable, centered. Wow. Nice pick.

Great Brown autograph!

related note: I read on here in the past that Keating still sold to people...any truth to that rumor?

Also I pulled the trigger on this 1919 Reds Manuel Cueto

I wrote to him this past Summer saying I wanted to buy some specific autographs and he sent me his price list. I wrote and told him that I agreed to his price....yet I never heard from him again.

Weird.

Picked up this one to close out my January pickups. Karl Spooner signed 1955 topps. Now down to 7 needed for my 1955 Dodgers team.

Last minute pickup. Been working on the memorabilia room and realized that there's a lot of empty space in my Catfish Hunter display area. Saw this for an excellent price and decided to get it. Nice HOF program of Cat as well as Dandridge and Williams. Will pick up the corresponding yearbook sometime down the road.
