Finally got this one in hand:


It's definitely much better than the original scan showed.

The back mistakenly identifies this PC as Nash College (in pencil) but I’ve found the same photograph taken from an alternate angle in a book on the Chilocco Indian School and with a date of “1916 or 1917”.



Given the face that this is an Azo postcard with 1918+ markings and given the significance of the 1917 year for the school, I’m convinced this is the 1917 team.

Now the big question remains, is Mose YellowHorse in the shot? I think the only fellow it could be would on the far left front row.

They are very cool cards (I own 3 E93 black backs myself) and probably cut from an uncut sheet that had not completed production (no back printing). They may very well have been used as "proofs" (meaning they were used to check for errors before a full run was produced), but usually collectors like to see hash marks in the borders before they call a card a "proof". I think that if it was used to "proofread" the card for any errors, then "proof" may not technically be the wrong term. Most would just call them "blank backs" to be safe. With hashmarks, we can be certain that they were used as proofs. Without them, we are uncertain. Others might use the less appealing term "printer's scrap".

The E93 blank backs originated from the same source that produced two E93 uncut sheet sets (in panels) that Mastro auctioned off a year or so ago. I would assume there were three sets and the original owner cut up one of the sheets (or more accurately, a partial sheet) into individual cards. To my knowledge, those are the only E93 blank backs known. So each one is unique. I think there were 19 of them total with no duplicates when the group was sold as a lot in Mastro. The winner has just broken up the group to make a little cash. I have been a bit surprised that they have not sold for more. Perhaps it is because t hey all came to the hobby at once and thus did not seem that rare. I think when they fade away into collections, that in the future they will be thought of as quite desirable.
