Wrong Image on Cards

While I don't have access to the image, advanced 19th century collectors know that the N403 Yum Yum labelled Cap Anson is actually Ned Williamson. In the same set, I know there is an error with Billy Sunday being misidentified, but I forget the details. There is also an N172 Old Judge labelled McGreachy (possible different spelling) and there is no player known by that name. Jay Miller can shed some light on that one. |

It seems that I may be alone on this, but to me the image is the most important part of the card. Therefore, to me a card which shows a player is a card of that player, independent of what the caption or the rear of the card states. |

I believe only the actual photograph counts, and the caption is irrelevant. If you have a photograph of Abraham Lincoln that is captioned Elvis Presley, who is it a photograph of? However, I realize that in the case of a baseball card, collectors will accept the Irv Young as Cy. Tough issue and I think there may be exceptions to the rule. I do not consider the Yum Yum of Anson to be an acceptable Cap Anson card. What do others think? |

I much prefer an issue that has both image an name correct, but with the scarcer issues I take what I can get...and what Barry stated. |

I think part of the reason that the E97 Young is accepted as Cy is other than the fact that Irv is left-handed, there is some vague resemblance to the portly Cy and collectors have only identified this error recently. What if you had a card that pictured Brooks Robinson but was captioned Jackie Robinson? Might collectors view this differently? In the case of the Weaver/Tinker error, you can't even see the player's face, so who cares? |

I have two E98 cards of "Cy" Young now that I absolutely HATE because they feature the wrong image. |

Hal- that's a perfectly valid response but I bet there are others who wouldn't care. It's an issue with no right or wrong answer. |

Nobody will buy them, so you can just donate one of them to my collection. Although it would bother me too that the player pictured is not Cy, since I will only have one Cy Young card in my collection. |
