What is going on at EBAY...T206 commons are going through the roof...PSA 8's over $2k PSA 7"s over $1k and PSA 6's as high as $700. It's insane the latest PSA price guide is 15% of what they are going for, there is no way I am going to pay that kind of scratch for no name players. I was thinking of trying to build the set but at these prices I am going to stick with HOF only. |

I am willing to bet the prices realized have to do more with registry competition than the card itself. |

If I read this thread correctly people are spending thousands of dollars over book for common cards, just so they can say they have the best set on the planet? |

When people b*tch and moan about card prices going through the roof. Don't collect that set if you don't want to pay for it. Why is it that people complain when the set they want to buy is appreciating but not when set they already own is appreciating? Quite frankly, I'm glad that there are people with big bucks keeping the hobby afloat so dealers and sellers can afford to be in business to offer me the cards that I can afford. |

I have to say that the prices of beaters is pretty crazy these days. I've been upgrading my near set (I'm just nine away -- 3 Cobbs, 2 Youngs, 1 Johnson, Demmitt, O'Hara, Elberfeld), and when I've been selling the upgraded beaters on ebay, I've been getting some very nice prices. Heck, I just sold an Otto Kruger on ebay for over $40 in SGC 30 condition. I won't complain about that, but just thank my lucky stars I got all the beaters I needed within the last couple of years, because now everyone it appears wants to put together a T206 set. |

I agree with David. Also, we really can't compare prices on low population 8s or other high grade cards with run of the mill commons. It is a completely different market when you are talking about the kinds of folks who are trying to put together a nm/mt T206 set and someone putting together a vg set (about a $950,000 difference). Over $40 for a gd common sounds a few bucks high, but that is a far cry from $2000 for a common. In spite of them both being T206s, I think it is like comparing apples and oragnes. |

One --perhaps a minor--reason you start collecting a set is because it is reassonably affordable. When it suddenly stops being affordable, you get mad. |

I can understand the fustration but this is seen all over ... In the Food/regional/PCl card market where I mostly collect, the cost of cards is getting out of sight...I find myself payng big bucks for most cards...paying 200+ for specific issues is normal... 30-60 dollars for commons is becoming expected.. I think there are more collectors in the pool today and the competition for these cards is getting more competive.. From my prespective, the VINTAGE market in general is on the rise!! this means to get those cheaper cards one must look longer and harder... just my 2 cents!! |

You should've checked the ebay stores. For $40 on ebay as a "buy it now" you could still have a better one: |

I've been buying up low grade commons all weekend for like $10-$15 a pop, most in G-VG condition. The market hasn't inflated that bad yet. Of course the high graded, HOFers and some SLers are a different story. |

I started this post and glad to see that there has been so much feedback. My point is this I realize that there are special circumstances such as rare backs and error cards and what not. But my opinion is that a common PSA 8 should not be worth more then a HOF PSA 7. It disgusts me that a common is worth more then say a Mathewson card one grade lower. There just is something seriously wrong with tath scenario. As far as population reports are considered there has to be a lot less cards submitted for common players then the hall of fammers so I do not give that stat much leverage. Yes you can get cards at a decent price that are PSA 5 and below but once you try for anything above the prices increase expotentially. |

Look at high grade T201 cards (and probably other high end material. It kind of reminds me of the US coin hobby 20+ years ago. |

I think that most pre war issues have not come close to realizing their full value. It is routine for set collectors to pay thousands of dollars for PSA 8 commons from the 50's and 60's. Once these guys are done building those sets, and most are getting close, they certainly are not going to build sets from the 70's and 80's. |

Been getting 90-100 for any T-206 PSA 5 common on ebay and 40-50 for most 4's. But 1933 Goudeys are also going nuts. Check this out. I just sold #5172165888, a #143 Glenn Wright in a 5 for $177.50. Guy already contacted me and can't wait to pay. He got into it with another who quit at $175. In other words, this guy would have paid MORE. A few weeks ago, the same card sold for 60 or so. Just depends on the day and who gets involved. |

Am I the only person who thinks that the Greminger card linked above looks incredibly short top to bottom? There looks to be barely any top and bottom margin at all. And I seem to be seeing more and more PSA 7s that look this way. Frankly, without a sufficiently large scan, I'm reluctant to spring for any 7s from PSA these days. |

Supply and demand shouldnt really count in this case just based on the fact their is probably more hall of fame collectors than the difference in the number of high grade examples on these 2 cards.I would think the Wheat card should fall into more peoples collecting goals than an Ed Greminger, especially since this is considered Wheats rookie card. |

By the way that southern leaguer PSA 8 sold for $2200 and the GAI 7 Matty black cap sold for $1750 made me sick to my stomach. If i would of known that collecting commons is more valuable then collecting HOf's I still would of not done it. I guess my collection of only HOF's is not going up in value nearly as fast as the nobody's. |
