Default Photos Used for Cards

Google "Willie Keeler images", and you will see the full image as used in two publications. I know that the photo was taken by Spooner & Wells in 1909 spring training in Macon because I have owned or viewed more than 100 of their images from that training. Macon's stadium is distinctive because of the scalloped roof overhangs on the grand stand. 1909 was the only year that the Highlanders trained in Macon. To my knowledge, there are no known records that Bain took 1909 photos of the Highlanders at spring training, and I am not aware of any actual such photos.

This 1923 photo of WaJo that was sold in the very recent Heritage auction:https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...kedLots-101116 was also used for WaJo's W503 card (shown below). Interestingly, the W503 cards are cataloged as being a 1922 issue, but this photo & card match suggests the W503 issue is no earlier than a 1923 issue.

Andrew, you're welcome & congrats! FYI, just in case you are not aware, another example of this WaJo photo, cropped slightly differently, was sold by RMY in its May 2018 auction - here's the link: https://rmyauctions.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=34378

Not sure what to make of this one but the background with some Seals has been cropped out of the original photo used to make the 49' Sommer & Kaufmann.

Herb Pennock photo used for 1928 W504, Yuengling's, Tharp's Ice Cream etc issues. What's left of the caption on the reverse indicates that this was also the first photo of Pennock in a Yankee uniform. News accounts have Pennock arriving + suiting up at spring training in New Orleans on March 14, 1923.

The stamp on the reverse is Pacific and Atlantic Photos, Inc.

The card isn't mine, btw!

Love it. Here is mine; image is used for t205 Card. I have been building up an archive of these things from various sources/archives. I am trying to put the pieces together. I have about 60 percent of the set In type 1 paul Thompson photos. Obviously, it is probably impossible to complete(many are lost forever) but i will try.. and it will be both fun and maddening. If anyone has one/ or knows of one for sale, , please lmk. Ben

Default Photos that match baseball cards

Hi, I am new Net 54, and I am not very good with computers. But I have a collection of some 8x10 black &white baseball photos from the 1940s. 184 in the collection. Over the years have tried to find out more about them, let's just say no one can tell me what I have for sure. I have been told everything from- photostats for baseball cards or that they were sold commercially through catalogs and magazine ads in the 1940s-50s, or that were photo packs. But that just does not fit the profile for these, yes they come close but No concrete evidence as to what.
OK, many of the images on the photos match baseball cards down to the letter. They do utilize the exact same images as the photos.
1947 Bond Bread cards that match: Ted Williams, Harry Brecheen, Aaron Robinson, Tommy Holmes, Bob Elliott, Ewell Blackwell, Lou Boudreau, Vern Stephens, Slats Marion, Bob Feller, Johnny Vander Meer, Andy Pafko, and many others.
Note on Bobby Doerr's image-the 1947 baseball card and photo spell his name as Bobbie Doerr.
thumbnail_IMG_0301.jpgAnd many of the photos match the 1952 Berk Ross Cards. About 11 in all. The Jackie Robinson and 1952 card- you see the scoreboard and it says 1946. And Satchel Paige's photo is of him playing for the Black Yankees in 1941. I know this because the exact image of him is in the Bettmann/Corbis archives.

I have to admit I am not really a photo person (love photo's) but no experience on them the picture valuations are so different hard to know what price is right for pictures

But it would be pretty cool to own the card and the photo that it was base off of.

Reviving an old thread so as to post in the appropriate place.

Harry Steinfeldt Cabinet photo taken between 1898-1902 at Meins Studio in Cincinnati Ohio.

This is the exact image used to produce both the E107 card and W600 cabinet.

Sold in Hunt a few years back and traded hands a couple of time since then. Has now found a permanent home.

Anyone see the Conlon DiMaggio image for M114? Sold last night on H&S auction. Very nice.

Big price, but outstanding photo. Was a favorite along with the Ruth/Cobb photo.

A few of mine (cards are not). Truly a fun hunt to match up photos to thier respective uses. The more obscure the better, IMO. Keep them coming!

Great stuff, Deron.

The Wajo photo and card are both hand cut. Haha.

The photo was taken not later than 1899; it was used in the team composite that was issued that year:

Well, that narrows it down to 1898/99. Probably his earliest image as a player as well.

And I guess it goes without saying that Meins probably took all of those images and cabinets of each player(or perhaps multiple copies) existed at one time.

Thanks!!

I have a decent sized collection of Baseball Magazine supplements (m113 & m114) and have managed to find some of the original photos, here are a few.

A composite press photo from September 1947 for an article discussing Kiner's chasing Babe's mark of 60 home runs. Used for 51 Topps and 47-66 Exhibits (not my cards). It ain't pretty, but it's cool.
