Default 5 Cards you feel will go up the most in the next 5 years while on a budget

Posted By: Scott Mt. Joy

Ok I have heard enough of the doom and gloom in other threads and I was wondering if someone had money in the next year to buy 5 cards valued at $500-$2000 each today, what would you pick. The plan would be to hold them for at least 5 years then sell, what would you advise? The only rule is it has to be a card/type that has sold at least once in the last 2 years.

I really only know the exhibit and clemente markets (i'll stick with pre war) but in those areas I would pick-

1. Any 1931-32 Exhibit
2. Any 1933 Exhibit
3. 1938 Dimaggio 4 on 1 Exhibit
4. 1929-30 Ruth 4 on 1 Exhibit
5. 1927 Gehrig Exhibit

Wagner - white border

Jackson - Cracker Jack

Cobb portrait green - white border

Mathewson portrait - white border

Mantle - 1952 Topps

I don't think these are the 5 that should go up, just the 5 that will go up.

And I didn't see the price limitation... besides, who'd be investing and speculating in ball cards???

"cards valued at $500-$2000 each"

I would say a T206 Demmitt, St. Louis, and a T206 O'Hara, St. Louis. Both can be had in lower grade for around $1500-$2000 each.

T206 Cobb Green VG-ish
1933 Goudey Ruth 144 in a 3-ish
E95 Cobb G-ish
1921 Exhibit Ruth
E103 Matty or Johannes

Yeah, I kind of took the easy route here. Cobb and Ruth will always appeal to baseball people and general collectors even if they aren't seasoned vintage collectors. The E103's are a little further into the vintage collector arena. A Matty T206 pitching or T3 maybe should have made the list in place of the Exhibit Ruth.

I would add:

T206 Young (Portrait) VG-EX

Classic set, everyone knows about the award and 511 is insurmountable.

I have seen almost every Mantle card do well this year and we should see more of that in the coming years. I also feel that pre-war Hall of Famers will gain more respect again when the economy turns up hill.

Marshall,

Just curious why Coles and Otey are at the top of your list? Is it based on scarcity, appearance, etc....

Regards,

Scott
